A CHANCE lodging at a family home has led to a lifetime of happiness for a Wantage couple.

Harry Epps was given a room at the Paling house in Sussex in 1943 as he trained for the Royal Navy.

It was there he met his future wife Louise. But he had no idea they would later be married as she was only nine.

It was when he returned some years later to visit that they fell in love, and they were married in 1952.

The couple, of Eastbury Court, celebrated 60 years of marriage yesterday.

Mrs Epps, 78, who is chairman of the Wantage?s Towns-women?s Guild, said: ?I have just loved him all my life.

?At nine you are not very interested but when I was about 15 I thought ?I do love you?.

?We are just so happy and we have such a lovely family. I cannot complain about anything.?

She said there was no problem with her parents accepting Harry into the family, adding: ?He was really like a son to them.?

And when asked what the key to their long lasting marriage was, she said: ?It has to be give and take.

?Everybody always says that, but it is true.?

Mr Epps, 87, who worked as a researcher for the Wellcome Foundation for 25 years, said: ?Obviously we have got on very well together to last 60 years.

?We have three daughters and they are all married and they are all very happy. So we are very pleased about that.?

When asked what the secret to his long and happy marriage was, he replied: ?Probably my wife?s tolerance I should think.?

He added: ?We just get on together, that?s it, and you put up with each other.?

The diamond couple were among the first people to move into the King?s Wharf development eight years ago.

They previously lived in Childrey for about 20 years.

The couple?s three daughters are Nicola, Laurey, and Joanna. They have six grand- children, one great granddaughter, and seven step- grandchildren.
