How life turned left: Meteorite fragments help explain why living things only use molecules with specific orientations

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Researchers analyzing meteorite fragments that fell on a frozen lake in Canada have developed an explanation for the origin of life's handedness -- why living things only use molecules with specific orientations. The work also gave the strongest evidence to date that liquid water inside an asteroid leads to a strong preference of left-handed over right-handed forms of some common protein amino acids in meteorites. The result makes the search for extraterrestrial life more challenging.

"Our analysis of the amino acids in meteorite fragments from Tagish Lake gave us one possible explanation for why all known life uses only left-handed versions of amino acids to build proteins," said Dr. Daniel Glavin of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Glavin is lead author of a paper on this research to be published in the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science.

In January, 2000, a large meteoroid exploded in the atmosphere over northern British Columbia, Canada, and rained fragments across the frozen surface of Tagish Lake. Because many people witnessed the fireball, pieces were collected within days and kept preserved in their frozen state. This ensured that there was very little contamination from terrestrial life. "The Tagish Lake meteorite continues to reveal more secrets about the early Solar System the more we investigate it," said Dr. Christopher Herd of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, a co-author on the paper who provided samples of the Tagish Lake meteorite for the team to analyze. "This latest study gives us a glimpse into the role that water percolating through asteroids must have played in making the left-handed amino acids that are so characteristic of all life on Earth."

Proteins are the workhorse molecules of life, used in everything from structures like hair to enzymes, the catalysts that speed up or regulate chemical reactions. Just as the 26 letters of the alphabet are arranged in limitless combinations to make words, life uses 20 different amino acids in a huge variety of arrangements to build millions of different proteins. Amino acid molecules can be built in two ways that are mirror images of each other, like your hands. Although life based on right-handed amino acids would presumably work fine, they can't be mixed. "Synthetic proteins created using a mix of left- and right-handed amino acids just don't work," says Dr. Jason Dworkin of NASA Goddard, co-author of the study and head of the Goddard Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory, where the analysis was performed.

Since life can't function with a mix of left- and right-handed amino acids, researchers want to know how life -- at least, life on Earth -- got set up with the left-handed ones. "The handedness observed in biological molecules -- left-handed amino acids and right-handed sugars -- is a property important for molecular recognition processes and is thought to be a prerequisite for life," said Dworkin. All ordinary methods of synthetically creating amino acids result in equal mixtures of left- and right-handed amino acids. Therefore, how the nearly exclusive production of one hand of such molecules arose from what were presumably equal mixtures of left and right molecules in a prebiotic world has been an area of intensive research.

The team ground up samples of the Tagish Lake meteorites, mixed them into a hot-water solution, then separated and identified the molecules in them using a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer. "We discovered that the samples had about four times as many left-handed versions of aspartic acid as the opposite hand," says Glavin. Aspartic acid is an amino acid used in every enzyme in the human body. It is also used to make the sugar substitute Aspartame. "Interestingly, the same meteorite sample showed only a slight left-hand excess (no more than eight percent) for alanine, another amino acid used by life."

"At first, this made no sense, because if these amino acids came from contamination by terrestrial life, both amino acids should have large left-handed excesses, because both are common in biology," says Glavin. "However, a large left-hand excess in one and not the other tells us that they were not created by life but instead were made inside the Tagish Lake asteroid." The team confirmed that the amino acids were probably created in space using isotope analysis.

Isotopes are versions of an element with different masses; for example, carbon 13 is a heavier, and less common, variety of carbon. Since the chemistry of life prefers lighter isotopes, amino acids enriched in the heavier carbon 13 were likely created in space.

"We found that the aspartic acid and alanine in our Tagish Lake samples were highly enriched in carbon 13, indicating they were probably created by non-biological processes in the parent asteroid," said Dr. Jamie Elsila of NASA Goddard, a co-author on the paper who performed the isotopic analysis. This is the first time that carbon isotope measurements have been reported for these amino acids in Tagish Lake. The carbon 13 enrichment, combined with the large left-hand excess in aspartic acid but not in alanine, provides very strong evidence that some left-handed proteinogenic amino acids -- ones used by life to make proteins -- can be produced in excess in asteroids, according to the team.

Some have argued that left-handed amino acid excesses in meteorites were formed by exposure to polarized radiation in the solar nebula -- the cloud of gas and dust from which asteroids, and eventually the Solar System, were formed. However, in this case, the left-hand aspartic acid excesses are so large that they cannot be explained by polarized radiation alone. The team believes that another process is required.

Additionally, the large left-hand excess in aspartic acid but not in alanine gave the team a critical clue as to how these amino acids could have been made inside the asteroid, and therefore how a large left-hand excess could arise before life originated on Earth.

"One thing that jumped out at me was that alanine and aspartic acid can crystallize differently when you have mixtures of both left-handed and right-handed molecules," said Dr. Aaron Burton, a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow at NASA Goddard and a co-author on the study. "This led us to find several studies where researchers have exploited the crystallization behavior of molecules like aspartic acid to get left-handed or right-handed excesses. Because alanine forms different kinds of crystals, these same processes would produce equal amounts of left- and right-handed alanine. We need to do some more experiments, but this explanation has the potential to explain what we see in the Tagish Lake meteorite and other meteorites."

The team believes a small initial left-hand excess could get amplified by crystallization and dissolution from a saturated solution with liquid water. Some amino acids, like aspartic acid, have a shape that lets them fit together in a pure crystal -- one composed of just left-handed or right-handed molecules. For these amino acids, a small initial left- or right-hand excess could become greatly amplified at the expense of the opposite-handed crystals, similar to the way a large snowball gathers more snow and gets bigger more rapidly when rolled downhill than a small one. Other amino acids, like alanine, have a shape that prefers to join together with their mirror image to make a crystal, so these crystals are composed of equal numbers of left- and right-handed molecules. As these "hybrid" crystals grow, any small initial excess would tend to be washed out for these amino acids. A requirement for both of these processes is a way to convert left-handed to right-handed molecules, and vice-versa, while they are dissolved in the solution.

This process only amplifies a small excess that already exists. Perhaps a tiny initial left-hand excess was created by conditions in the solar nebula. For example, polarized ultraviolet light or other types of radiation from nearby stars might favor the creation of left-handed amino acids or the destruction of right-handed ones, according to the team. This initial left-hand excess could then get amplified in asteroids by processes like crystallization. Impacts from asteroids and meteorites could deliver this material to Earth, and left-handed amino acids might have been incorporated into emerging life due to their greater abundance, according to the team. Also, similar enrichments of left-handed amino acids by crystallization could have occurred on Earth in ancient sediments that had water flowing through them, such as the bottoms of rivers, lakes, or seas, according to the team.

The result complicates the search for extraterrestrial life -- like microbial life hypothesized to dwell beneath the surface of Mars, for example. "Since it appears a non-biological process can create a left-hand excess in some kinds of amino acids, we can't use such an excess alone as proof of biological activity," says Glavin.

The research was funded by the NASA Astrobiology Institute, the Goddard Center for Astrobiology, the NASA Cosmochemistry Program, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Welcome to part two of planning a baby shower the mum-to-be will love!

• gathered inspiration
• found a location, and
• sent out the invitations.

Now it's onto the really fun stuff...planning all the little details that will make the baby shower fun, festive and memorable. The theme that you've chosen should be carried through all of the details, to make your baby shower feel cohesive.


Let's decorate...
There are plenty of ready-made party decorations available on the market. Head to your local party supplier or check out online party stores for all your needs. ?If you're feeling crafty and wanting something a little more unique, you could make them yourself to match your theme. ?Your decorations could be as simple and inexpensive as tissue paper pom poms, bunting or a banner, bunches of balloons, or a posy of flowers. ?Colour can be easily added to your party through table cloths, napkins, platters and more. Colour coordinate your party foods to go with your theme too! If you're having fairy bread, stick to one colour sprinkle such as pink or blue; colour your cupcake icing to match, or pop in a cupcake topper.?Here's a few examples...
Every party needs a cake...
Everybody loves cake. It doesn't matter if you're 8 or 80...the cake is the centerpiece of every party, and probably the most photographed aspect of the event...aside from the guest of honour of course. ?The design of the cake is just as important as the flavour. ?Indulge the mum-to-be, and have the cake made in her favourite flavour, then decorate it to suit your theme. Bake it at home, or hire a cake maker to create one for you...but bear in mind, purchasing a decorated cake can be expensive, so make sure you factor that into your party budget. ?The only limit is your imagination!
What to feed the guests... The food and beverages you serve at your baby shower will depend on the location, the time of day, and the season. ?Most baby showers are held as a morning or afternoon tea, making finger foods the perfect thing to nibble on. ?Ensure you have a good balance of sweet and savoury morsels. ?Four-six different options of each would be appropriate, and don't forget a vegetarian option or two. ?Once again, utilise pinterest to collect recipes as you research ideas for your event. ?Seek help from family and friends to help bake and cook...they will be honoured to help out! ?Most recipes can be made ahead, saving you time on the day of the baby shower.

Having fun at a baby shower can be thirsty work. Mix up a big bowl of delicious fruit punch, make use of your coffee maker, and purchase some fruity teas for your guests. ?Pitchers of cool water are always appreciated. The big question... will you be making alcohol available to your guests??Decide whether or not your baby shower will be a "dry"?event.

Get your game on...
There are pages and pages of websites that cater for baby shower games, such as Baby Shower 101. Games are fun, and they give your guests something to do during the party. They can be corny and cliche, but they definitely get the party started. ?Three to four games is plenty for a two hour baby shower.

An alternative to the traditional games is to get a little crafty...have your guests make headbands and hair clips for the baby, or perhaps hand paint baby clothes. ?Advice cards to the mum-to-be are a really nice keepsake that can be filled out by the guests at the party, and included in a baby album afterwards.

Don't forget to take photos...
Do you have a friend that is handy with a camera? Invite them along to take photos for the mum-to-be of her special day. As the hostess, chances are you won't have time to capture those memories. ?A photographer can capture all of the little memorable details, the guests, the gifts, the fun and frivolity, that you have spent so much time planning for. ?The mum-to-be will love looking back on the baby shower, and a photo album would make a lovely gift. ?Take it one step further and set up a fun photo booth with props! Your guests will have so much fun playing!!

It's polite to say thank you...
As your guests leave, it's a nice gesture to give your guests a thank you gift. This doesn't need to be expensive...cartons of popcorn with "ready to pop" on the tag; individually packaged home made biscuits; or perhaps a bar of chocolate wrapped in a thank you message. A small gesture to say thank you, you're presence at the baby shower and your gifts are truly appreciated.

Indiana court: Son can sue dad over car accident

An Indiana man can sue his dad for accidentally driving into him, causing significant leg injuries, the Indiana Supreme Court has ruled.

The state?s high court on Monday overturned a lower court ruling that said Robert L. Clark Jr. was prohibited by state law from suing Robert L. Clark Sr. for damages for injuries the son suffered in the?Sept. 5, 2007, incident in Adams County.

According to court documents, the younger Clark, age 46, was a passenger in a car being driven by his father. When they arrived at their destination, the son got out to help his father park. He walked in front of the vehicle and motioned to his father to drive forward into a parking space.

Once the vehicle had pulled in, the son raised his hand to signal his father to stop. Instead of pressing the brake pedal, the father?s foot hit the accelerator. The car lurched forward, pinning Clark Jr. between it and the next vehicle.

The son suffered significant leg injuries. He and his wife filed a lawsuit against his father in November 2008, alleging negligence.

The Adams County trial court threw out the case, saying that under the state?s ?guest statute? drivers are not liable for loss or damage arising from injuries to or the death of?the drivers? family members. The Indiana Court of Appeals reversed that ruling and said the son could sue.

The Supreme Court, in a 3-2 opinion, agreed with the appellate decision and overturned the trial court ruling.

The justices said:

The Indiana Guest Statute prevents certain designated passengers from recovering damages for injuries resulting from the ordinary negligence of the motor vehicle operator, where such passenger was ?being transported without payment in or upon the motor vehicle."? Ind. Code ? 34-30-11-1 (emphasis added).? We hold that, as to injuries inflicted when such a passenger has exited the vehicle and is standing outside of it and directing the driver's attempt to park, the passenger is not "in or upon" the vehicle and thus is not precluded from bringing a negligence action against the driver.

HBT: Angels discussing trade for Rays' Shields

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported over the weekend that the Angels had serious interest in acquiring starter James Shields from the Rays.

And now it appears Anaheim is getting serious.

From ESPN?s Tim Kurkjian comes word that the Halos and Rays have discussed a trade that would send Shields out west in exchange for center fielder Peter Bourjos and catcher Hank Conger. But the ?deal is complicated,? according to Kurkjian?s source, because money would also have to be involved and struggling right-hander Ervin Santana might somehow be worked into the mix.

Shields, 30, has posted an ugly 4.39 ERA in 131 1/3 innings this season despite a sparkling 124/39 K/BB ratio. His contract carries a $9 million club option for 2013 and a $12 million club option for 2014.

Bourjos, 25, is an elite defender who has been made expendable by the rise of Mike Trout. Conger is a 24-year-old former first-round pick who boasts a .298/.360/.463 career batting line in the minor leagues.

New Types Added

In light of some questions that were brought up in the OOC, we have added two new types to zombies:

Type Beta (B): These zombies look like normal humans, except for two things; they all have blue-tinted skin and their hair always seems to be in shades of gray, silver, or white. Type Betas are the only zombies that could truly call themselves the Resurrected; having been born from two (male and female, like humans do) type Alpha zombies, these would be your 'purebloods' of the race, if the term applied. They age until they reach the same age as when the parents were when they died. After that, the never appear to age any further. The only odd things about this race is that they have little regenerative abilities and can die. However, they have been known to have extraordinary mental capabilities, such as pyrokinesis, telekinesis, cryokinesis, etc., etc. The most powerful of these can even teleport.

Type Delta (D): These are the zombies the Resurrected hate being confused with, the monsters that tend to give them all a bad name. These zombies are people who died and were resurrected, but failed at achieving perfect revival. Because of this, they are constantly stuck somewhere in-between life and death; they simply cannot come to terms that they have died and that they were brought back to life. Although crazed and highly unstable, type Delta's are the most powerful of the Resurrected simply because they have complete control over their regenerative abilities; they can control their own flesh and bone at will, although not so much as to be able to generate entirely new limbs. Take care; these are not your mindless zombies, but intelligent psychopaths. Although they can die, that doesn't mean they care....

The Lung Cancer Risk: Five Fake Treatments for Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Sadly, most people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma die within five years of their mesothelioma diagnosis. In their quest for a cure, many patients turn to alternative "treatments." According to recent medical data, most of these "treatments" simply do not work, and many can cause serious harm. Read on to learn which fake mesothelioma treatments to avoid.

1. Rattlesnake Powder Therapy

Rattlesnake treatments are based on a medically unproven claim that a powder derived from rattlesnake has the power to kill cancer. The rattlesnake powder is made by cutting off the head of the snake and drying the remaining flesh in the sun. The dehydrated snake is then ground into powder and packaged into capsules. The patient is supposed to take one capsule every hour until he or she is healed. Alarmingly, many rattlesnake healers insist that this "cure" cannot be combined with any other medication. Thus, cancer patients are told to stop taking their cancer drugs and painkillers in order to benefit from the magical power of rattlesnake.

2. Oxidative Stress Treatments

Oxygen-based treatments are grounded in the idea that cancer cells cannot survive in a highly oxygenated environment. Oxygen therapy proponents attempt to produce lethal levels of hydrogen peroxide in cancer cells by administering high-dose intravenous combinations of vitamin C, vitamin K and a drug called Perftec. Although the proponents of this therapy claim that it only kills the cancer cells and is harmless to the surrounding tissues, these claims have not been scientifically proven.

3. Melatonin Therapy

Melatonin cancer treatments use high doses of melatonin, a hormone that is naturally produced by the body, to defeat cancer. The melatonin healers claim that, in high doses, melatonin boosts the immune system, which then destroys the cancer cells. While some healers recommend increasing the levels of melatonin through a twice-a-day meditation sessions, most others administer melatonin in capsules. This approach might be dangerous because the long-term effects of high doses of melatonin are unknown.

4. The Rife Machine

The Rife machine was developed in the 1930s by a microbiologist named Dr. Royal Rife. This machine attempts to kills cancer cells by administering specific sound frequencies to the body. The machine allegedly sends the sound waves deep into the tissues and is so effective that all that is required is a three-minute treatment every other day. While the promoters of this super-treatment (which costs thousands of dollars) claim phenomenal success, their claims are lacking evidentiary support.

5. DHEA Therapy

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a potent steroid hormone. The body produces low quantities of DHEA naturally, but the production of DHEA decreases as the body ages. The DHEA promoters claim that the reduction in the "fountain of youth" hormone causes cancer, which is why high-dose DHEA supplementation is necessary to beat cancer. However, high doses of DHEA can potentially cause liver and prostate damage. While the research into the benefits of DHEA continues, so far no proof has been produced showing that DHEA helps fight cancer.

As the sun has finally arrived, millions of over 50s will be digging out the Pimms and parasols and getting the family over for a party. Research by Saga Home Insurance shows that two thirds of over 50s say their home is the venue for family get-togethers and one in eight say their garden is where they entertain, for these people, the start of the summer is the start of the party season.

The research also indicates that grandparents seem to be the hosts with the most when it comes to family parties. 66% of grandparents host general family get-togethers, 42% host family birthdays and 42% also say their home is the venue for the family Christmas celebrations.

All this means that grandparents are the true party people, attending more parties each year than the rest of the over 50s. Two thirds (65%) of over 50s say they attend 1-5 parties a year however a fifth of grandparents (18%) say they attend up to 10 family functions.

Regionally it is those in the South East (75%) who host the most parties overall.

Commenting on the research, Roger Ramsden, Chief Executive, Saga Services, said: ?Nan and Grandad?s appears to be the place to be for a family knees up, however grandparents also tend to be the family members with the bigger and more expensive collections of ornaments and furniture, therefore revellers ought to take care before conga-ing around the garden.?

10 million Galaxy S III phones sold, says Samsung Mobile head

Samsung Mobile head JK Shin has reportedly told the Korean press that the company's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III, has sold more than 10 million units worldwide. The news follows earlier reports that Samsung intended to reach the 10 million milestone by the end of July, which it's now achieved with weeks to spare. In the two months since the device made its international debut in London, the Galaxy S III has gone on sale in all major smartphone markets, including the U.S. and Sammy's native South Korea, where it enjoyed record first-day sales.

The number puts the Galaxy S III on track to surpass sales of its predecessor, the Galaxy S II, which sold 20 million units worldwide inside of its first year of availability. By contrast, that phone took around five months to reach the 10 million mark.

Ex-bankers go solo in the Gulf

DUBAI (Reuters) - After a 16-year career at Morgan Stanley Lebanese-born banker May Nasrallah detected a gap in the Middle East market for advising small companies, prompting her to leave the bank and set up her own financial advisory firm in Dubai.

Three years on, she has lured a number of her former Morgan Stanley colleagues to join her company, deNovo Corporate Advisors, which is helping small private Middle East companies that are looking for acquisitions, joint ventures or capital-raising opportunities in the region.

"We wanted to do something different to the international investment banks in that our advisory firm was created in the Middle East and our focus and strategy is entirely for the Middle East," said Nasrallah, sitting in her office on the 25th floor of Emirates Towers, a swanky office building in Dubai's financial hub overlooking the city's racecourse.

Nasrallah, who grew up mostly in Kuwait, is one of at least a dozen senior bankers in the Middle East who since the global financial crisis have opted to give up careers at large financial institutions to become entrepreneurs in the Gulf's expanding financial industry.

An economics and politics graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Nasrallah spent stints at Morgan Stanley in New York, London and Hong Kong before being promoted in 2005 to build the bank's Middle East and North Africa franchise. In 2009 she decided to put her international and local experience to use advising smaller companies, a sector she felt was being overlooked by the big multinational banks.

Global banks flocked to the Gulf during the boom years of 2003 to 2007, aiming to make a quick buck from the oil-rich region, but were mostly catering to large Middle Eastern corporations and sovereign wealth funds.

That strategy has proved far less lucrative in the past few years as the global financial crisis and economic downturn have forced those customers to refocus on their local markets.

According to Thomson Reuters data, 20 global banks earned a combined $234.8 million in fees from their Middle East business in the first half of this year. That was down from over $450 million earned in the first half of 2007, although up 5 percent from the same period last year.

But while global banks have retrenched in the region in the past few years, seasoned bankers who have spent years here say they are finding plenty of business opportunities because they understand the dynamics of doing business here and are committed to serving clients over the long term.

Setting up a business in Dubai or Abu Dhabi is also relatively easier than in most other large financial centers and has the added benefit of tax-free business zones.

Dubai issued 14,360 business licenses in 2011, according to the Department of Economic Development data, a 14 percent increase on the previous year.

"In my business, it is very simple. You are selling comfort and not just a product," said Pushpak Damodar, who worked at Deutsche Bank's asset management arm before setting up Global Frontiers Advisors in Dubai in 2009. The firm advises on private placements and provides research and consulting services to institutional investors seeking emerging and frontier markets exposure.

"Many of the institutions that came to the region during the boom time proved to have a short-term view, it was all about selling products and very little effort about understanding the regional requirements and building a longer-term presence."

Many global investors are now rethinking their strategy in the region and are looking for reliable partners to ensure they don't miss out on future growth prospects, he said.

"These markets are going to leapfrog in the years to come. If you don't get in now, then you will have a significant disadvantage five years down the line," Damodar said.

NATIONAL PRIDE

Zaid Maleh, a former head of Middle East and Africa investment banking for Moscow-based VTB Capital, set up DACH Advisory earlier this year to advise Russian companies among others. Clients include Russian venture capital firm Synergy Innovations, an affiliate of Synergy University, Russia's largest private university which is looking to set up a campus in the Middle East.

"There is a lot of interest among investors to be in this region. It's crucial to their future growth. You just have to find the right partners who are here for the long term," said Maleh, an Austrian national of Syrian origin.

As faster economic growth and rising incomes in the Middle East create business opportunities, Ziad Makkawi, a veteran Lebanese banker and entrepreneur, decided against retiring and instead set up Y+Ventures this year, a venture capital company he runs with a partner in Dubai.

He had helped set up Lebanon Invest, the region's first local investment bank in 1994 in Beirut, and later founded asset management firm Algebra Capital, which he sold to U.S. fund manager Franklin Templeton in 2009.

"After selling Algebra, I had pretty much thought about taking a break but since you can't teach an old dog new tricks, I decided to do what I know best, which is to set up companies and see them grow," Makkawi said.

Y+Ventures focuses on early stage investments in the MENA region, mainly in the digital, mobile phone and Internet sectors and supports young and female entrepreneurs in particular.

For entrepreneurs like Makkawi and Nasrallah the appeal of becoming an entrepreneur is reinforced by national pride.

"For me personally, it was partly to give back to the region ... where my roots are and to show that this part of the world can create what other regions have done successfully before," Nasrallah said.

For the region to succeed, however, it needs to develop a culture that accepts failure in business, said Makkawi. At present, business is so risk-averse that once a venture fails, it is rare to see those individuals coming back to the market with fresh ideas, he said.

"We benefit in the region in the sense that there is money flowing around, but unfortunately in this market there is still a lack of tolerance towards failure," he said.

"For entrepreneurship to evolve there needs to be a culture of failure. Even in the most developed nations, entrepreneurs have failed and then evolved."

1972 Olympics Munich Massacre Anniversary: IOC President Jacques Rogge Rules Out Minute Of Silence

LONDON -- IOC President Jacques Rogge won't budge: There will be no minute's silence for the Israeli victims of the 1972 Munich massacre at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

Rogge rejected the latest calls Saturday for a special observance to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the murder of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian gunmen at the Munich Games.

"We feel that the opening ceremony is an atmosphere that is not fit to remember such a tragic incident," Rogge said.

The International Olympic Committee has come under pressure from politicians in the United States, Israel and Germany to pay tribute to the slain Israelis during Friday's ceremony.

Rogge said the IOC will honor them at a reception in London during the games on Aug. 6. He said IOC officials will also attend a ceremony in Germany on the anniversary of the attack on Sept. 5 at the military airfield of Furstenfeldbruck where most of the Israelis died.

Rogge also noted that he has attended several ceremonies with the Israeli Olympic Committee and Israeli athletes during recent games.

"We feel that we are able to give a very strong homage and remembrance for the athletes within the sphere of the national Olympic committee," he said at a news conference. "We feel that we are going to do exactly the same at the exact place of the killings at the military airport near Munich on the 5th of September, the exact date."

During the second week of the Munich Games, eight members of the Black September militant group penetrated the laxly secured Olympic Village and took Israeli team members hostage. A day later, all 11 were dead. German police killed five of the eight assassins during a failed rescue attempt and Israeli agents tracked down and killed the others.

The Israeli and German foreign ministers and the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee have urged the IOC to observe a minute's silence.

President Barack Obama also supports the campaign for a minute's silence, White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor told Yahoo News in an email Friday.

Rogge was asked whether he was swayed by Obama's view.

"We also pay big attention to recommendations coming either from the political world, or cultural world, or world of enterprise," Rogge said. "And we take then a decision taking into consideration (those recommendations). I will not say that we are necessarily following the advice, but we take it into consideration, yes."

On Sunday morning, a memorial event will be held in east London attended by London Mayor Boris Johnson and Efraim Zinger, head of Israel's Olympic committee.

On another issue related to Israel, Rogge said the IOC would investigate any athletes who pull out of competing against Israelis in London claiming they were injured. In the past, athletes from Iran have withdrawn from Olympic events that included Israelis without facing sanctions.

"If an athlete is genuinely injured or ill, then of course it is understandable," Rogge said. "But we will examine every case very thoroughly and we will examine every case with an independent medical team. If the medical team does not ratify the decision of the first doctor, then the athlete will be punished."

Rogge said the IOC has reminded all national Olympic committees, not just Arab bodies, that refusing to compete against another competitor is "totally forbidden by the Olympic Charter."

Rogge spoke following a daylong IOC executive board meeting. The full IOC will hold a three-day general assembly starting Tuesday.

With six days to go until the opening of the London Games, Rogge expressed confidence in preparations after a week of headlines about concerns over security, transportation and other matters. The focus has been on the failure of private security firm G4S to recruit enough guards to protect the venues, a blunder which forced the British government to call up an extra 3,500 soldiers.

Rogge said the IOC has received full explanations from London organizers and the government. "We are reassured that everything that is needed has been put in place," he said. "Yes it has been an issue. It has been identified. Corrective measures were taken. I humbly believe it is time to move on."

Rogge also said "common sense" would prevail in protecting sponsors from "ambush marketing" by brands not officially associated with the games. The issue gained prominence this week when London organizing head Sebastian Coe suggested in a radio interview that a spectator wearing a Pepsi T-shirt might not be allowed into an Olympic venue because Coca-Cola is a main sponsor.

"Individual cases will not be pursued by the police, that goes without saying," Rogge said. "But if there is a blatant attempt at ambush marketing by another company or by a group of people with commercial views, then of course we will intervene.

"If you have a T-shirt with the logo of a competitor of one of our sponsors, then we will not intervene, of course."

Public-private partnership yields results at Brookline golf course

With $15,000, five students, two teacher?s assistants and a supportive Board of Selectmen, a private-public project to create an outdoor venue is underway at the Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course.

Brookline Recreation Director Lisa Paradis said the town is partnering with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design to construct a new concession stand and patio at the golf course.

?It?s something we never could have done if we didn?t have the opportunity to work with students designing and building just for the material costs,? Paradis told the Brookline TAB.

Students at the school are designing and building the structure, while the town is footing the $15,000 bill for materials.? The Board of Selectmen approved the project at their July 10 meeting.

MassArt instructor Sam Batchelor, an architect with DesignLAB Architects in Boston, is leading the graduate students in a course called Community Build Studio, where graduate students in the architect program design and build a small structure for a public or non-profit entity.

?This seemed like a pretty good fit. It has sort of a unique set of circumstances in terms of size, funding and desire. We need projects that allow students to create, design, and use creativity. First and foremost, the students are designers and they must execute that skill and put that design into place,? he said.

The students went through a three-week design period, and presented renderings to Paradis and other town officials for review. The material bill is the town?s only cost in the project

?It?s just like any other professional design project, just on a smaller scale,? Batchelor said.

And students are already working hard, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, building the concrete structure, which will be veneered with stones and topped off with a wooden roof.

Batchelor said they have about another four weeks to go until the project is complete.

?It?s going pretty well. You do it every summer and you see some of the challenges. It?s interesting to see the students react and manage the work within the budget,? he said. ?They work hard hours, and in some cases it?s new for them. I think it?s a good couple of lessons.?

Paradis said it?s a well-respected program, and the town?s first partnership with MassART.

Tom Ellis, Head Golf Professional at the course, said the structure will add a lot to the green.

?The project will enhance the daily play and golf experience for all players providing them with another convenient option to purchase a sandwich or beverage during their round,? he said. ?It will also give golf tournaments and leagues an additional place to gather after their rounds.?

SPIN METER: 'Middle class' turns fuzzy in politics

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a recent speech, President Barack Obama referred to the "middle class" 14 times, defining it as a family that makes up to $250,000 a year. Republican challenger Mitt Romney has looked at it from the other direction, saying that someone who falls into poverty "is still middle class."

In the fuzzy labels and loose speech of this political season, "middle class" has ballooned to cover just about everyone. So what does the term really mean?

There's no official definition.

If anything, a slew of economic data suggests a middle class that's actually shrinking. Mid-wage manufacturing and other jobs are disappearing due to automation and outsourcing, while lower-income positions and poverty spike higher. The White House's chief economist, Alan Krueger, said in January that the middle class fell from 50 percent of U.S. households in 1970 to 42 percent in 2010, as more families moved to the extreme ends of income distribution.

But it's not just about economic ranges. And politicians are not bound by such gauges anyway.

"Politicians love to use the term, because it's vague and connotes an image of regular American people." said Dennis Gilbert, a sociology professor at Hamilton College and author of "The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality." He said, the varying uses of "middle class" on the campaign trail are "dishonest, and it's absurd."

In recent months, the phrase has been popping up with increased frequency. Referring to the election as a "make-or-break" moment for the middle class, Obama used the term repeatedly in his July 9 speech calling for an extension of "middle-class" tax breaks for families making less than $250,000, or $200,000 for individuals ? basically everyone but the top 2 percent. He mentioned the phrase seven times at a fundraiser Tuesday in San Antonio.

Romney has suggested that the upper bounds of the middle class include families earning $200,000. He's pushing an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for everyone, including the wealthiest 2 percent. Romney's campaign seeks to highlight a weak economy that he says is a "kick in the gut to the middle class," with a new video this week attacking what he calls an Obama record of "political payoffs and middle-class layoffs."

Just Wednesday, Republican House Speaker John Boehner stepped into the fray with a comment that Obama "doesn't give a damn about middle-class Americans who are out there looking for work."

Responded Obama spokesman Jay Carney: The middle class is the "principal preoccupation" of Obama's presidency.

The meaning of "middle class" has grown even harder to parse following a populist Occupy movement that for months protested high unemployment and income inequality with a rallying cry of "We are the 99 percent."

Formal definitions vary, but few academics would say it covers more than 60 percent of Americans.

When it comes to earnings, the Census Bureau divides household income into quintiles, or groups of 20 percent. Some economists narrowly define the middle class as those in the middle 20 percent of the distribution, earning between $38,000 and $61,000. Others define it more broadly to include the middle 60 percent of the income distribution, between $20,000 and $100,000.

Defining who is poor, by contrast, is officially more absolute. The federal poverty line is based on the minimum income needed to have what the government considers a basic standard of living. Two times the poverty line is often a cutoff for "low-income" families who may be eligible for government aid. The poverty line currently is $22,314 for a family of four, meaning that a family making $44,000 could be both "low income" and "middle class."

Yet another way to gauge class is what income tax bracket you're in. The IRS has six of them. This year, the bottom bracket sets a tax rate of 10 percent for taxable income up to $17,400 for couples. The top bracket is 35 percent, applied to taxable income above $388,350. The middle class is commonly seen as falling in the 15 and 25 percent brackets, or couples whose taxable income is between $17,400 and $142,700. But some define it all the way up to the second-highest bracket, which is 33 percent and includes taxable income up to $388,350.

Sociologists take a broader view and focus not on income, but occupation: an "upper middle class" of white-collar specialists (lawyers, engineers, professors, economists and architects); and a "middle class" of lower-level white-collar workers (teachers, nurses, insurance sales and real estate agents). Together, these groups make up about 45 percent of households and sit near the upper end of the income distribution, just behind the top 1 percent.

The meanings shift more dramatically when measured by self-identification and quality of life.

Few Americans label themselves as upper class or lower class, which are seen as either pretentious or demeaning. Roughly 95 percent of adults say they are middle class (50 percent), upper middle class (13 percent) or working class (32 percent), according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted in May. Just 2 percent describe themselves as "better off" than upper middle class.

A separate ABC News poll found that being "middle class" often meant more to people than specific income levels, which can be affected by family size, expenses and local costs of living. At least two-thirds of adults said being middle class meant owning a home, being able to save for the future and afford things like vacation travel, the occasional new car and various other little luxuries, according to the 2010 poll.

The slippery definitions have created incongruous political moments.

In his January speech describing a shrinking middle class, Krueger, who is chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, offered a precise definition that has yet to be applied on the campaign trail: households with annual incomes within 50 percent of the national median income. The current median income is $49,445, putting middle-class earnings in a range from $25,000 to $75,000.

Democrats from higher cost-of-living areas, such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, have sought to push the "middle class" definition higher, arguing that families earning up to $250,000 in big cities such as New York and San Francisco are more likely to be dual-income worker bees than a wealthy elite. They initially pushed for extending tax cuts for those with incomes under $1 million, but are now backing Obama's proposal, which would yield an additional $366 billion in tax revenue over the next decade.

Romney, who sometimes battles perceptions that his vast wealth makes him out of touch, stirred derisive comments when he told MSNBC in January that he wasn't focusing so much on the needs of the poor. He explained that "somebody who's fallen from the middle class to poverty, in my opinion, is still middle class." Liberal bloggers were quick to ridicule the idea of "middle-class poverty."

"'Middle class' in politics is not a numerical value," said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "When voters hear 'middle class,' they don't hear people who make above or below this amount of money, they hear 'us.' It's a way for politicians to signal to voters that 'I share your values.'"

It's hard to entirely fault politicians who mirror definitions of "middle class" that voters want to hear.

But Jamieson says the fuzzy meanings confuse public debate, whether it's about spending for government safety-net programs for the poor, balancing the federal budget by taxing a wider range of income earners or creating jobs for an American middle class with varying degrees of education and skill levels. "That kind of slipperiness creates a disconnect between campaigning and governance," she said.
