Male dancers signal their strength to men and women

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Heterosexual men pick up clues about other men's physical qualities from their dance moves just as heterosexual women do, say researchers at Northumbria University.

A study, led by psychologist Dr Nick Neave and researcher Kristofor McCarty, used 3D motion-capture technology and biomechanical analyses to examine the extent to which male dancing provides clues about the dancer's physical strength and fitness to both male and female observers.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, suggest that male observers pick up on the strength of their potential rivals for female mates.

Researchers at Northumbria's School of Life Sciences filmed 30 males, aged 19-37, as they danced to a basic drum rhythm. Participants also completed a fitness test and assessments of upper and lower body strength. The dance clips were converted into virtual humanoid characters (avatars) and rated by women and men on perceived dance and physical qualities. The ratings were then correlated with various biomechanical indices.

The results showed that both sexes found significant positive associations between an individual's hand grip strength and their perceived dance quality, these qualities were picked up by the size and vigour of the movements of the upper body and arms.

Although it is traditionally thought that signals given off by men when they dance have been designed -- like animal mating displays -- to be interpreted as clues of their physical attributes to the opposite sex, it seems that heterosexual men are also making use of these signals, presumably to detect a potential love rival.

Dr Nick Neave believes that this increased sensitivity to male qualities by other heterosexual men may be due to intrasexual rivalry -- men sizing up the strength and virility of their competition.

He said: "Rated dance quality was positively associated with actual grip strength and these clues of upper-body strength were most accurately picked up by male observers. This ability to discern upper-body strength is principally because men are looking for cues of 'formidability' in other males.

"Upper-body strength is highly related to fighting ability as it reflects the ability to do damage, especially in intra-sexual conflicts. The ability to gauge strength before potential conflicts is sensible, especially to other males."

Also part of the research team were Northumbria University academics Dr Nick Caplan and Johannes H?nekopp, with Bernard Fink, from the Institute of Zoology and Anthropology, University of G?ttingen, Germany.

The study, "Male body movements as possible cues to physical strength: a biomechanical analysis", is published online in this month's American Journal of Human Biology

Quantum communication: Each photon counts

Monday, January 28, 2013

The detector combines near-unity detection efficiency with high timing resolution and has a very low error rate. The results have been published by Nature Communications(doi:10.1038/ncomms2307).

Ultrafast, efficient, and reliable single-photon detectors are among the most sought-after components in photonics and quantum communication, which have not yet reached maturity for practical application. Physicist Dr. Wolfram Pernice of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in cooperation with colleagues at Yale University, Boston University, and Moscow State Pedagogical University, achieved the decisive breakthrough by integrating single-photon detectors with nanophotonic chips. The detector combines near-unity detection efficiency with high timing resolution and has a very low error rate. The results have been published by Nature Communications(doi:10.1038/ncomms2307).

Without reliable detection of single photons, it is impossible to make real use of the latest advances in optical data transmission or quantum computation; it is like having no analog-digital converter in a conventional computer to determine whether the applied voltage stands for 0 or 1. Although a number of different single-photon detector models have been developed over the past few years, thus far, none have provided satisfactory performance.

Several new ideas and advanced developments went into the prototype developed within the "Integrated Quantum Photonics" project at the DFG Center of Functional Nanostructures (CFN). The new single-photon detector, tested in the telecommunications wavelength range, achieves a previously unattained detection efficiency of 91%.

The detector was realized by fabricating superconducting nanowires directly on top of a nanophotonic waveguide. This geometry can be compared to a tube that conducts light, around which a wire in a superconducting state is wound and, as such, has no electric resistivity. The nanometer-sized wire made of niobium nitride absorbs photons that propagate along the waveguide. When a photon is absorbed, superconductivity is lost, which is detected as an electric signal. The longer the tube, the higher is the detection probability. The lengths involved are in the micrometer range.

A special feature of the detector is its direct installation on the chip, which allows for it to be replicated at random. The single-photon detectors built thus far were stand-alone units, which were connected to chips with optical fibers. Arrangements of that type suffer from photons being lost in the fiber connection or being absorbed in other ways. These loss channels do not exist in the detector that is now fully embedded in a silicon photonic circuit. In addition to high detection efficiency, this gives rise to a remarkably low dark count rate. Dark counts arise when a photon is detected erroneously: for instance, because of a spontaneous emission, an alpha particle, or a spurious field. The new design also provides ultrashort timing jitter of 18 picoseconds, which is 18 times 10-12 seconds. The novel solution also makes it possible to integrate several hundreds of these detectors on a single chip. This is a basic precondition for future use in optical quantum computers.

The detector demonstrated in this study was designed to work at wavelengths in the Telekom bandwidth. The same detector architecture can also be used for wavelengths in the range of visible light. This would allow the principle to be employed in analyses of all structures that emit little light, i.e., photons, such as single molecules or bacteria.

China considering end to 13-year ban on video game consoles: report

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China is considering lifting a decade-long ban on video game consoles, the official China Daily newspaper reported on Monday, sending shares of major hardware makers such as Sony Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd surging.

In November, Sony's PlayStation 3 received a quality certification from a Chinese safety standards body, prompting speculation that Beijing would lift the ban, which the government said was imposed in 2000 to safeguard children's mental and physical development.

"We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market," the China Daily quoted an unnamed source from the Ministry of Culture as saying.

"However, since the ban was issued by seven ministries more than a decade ago, we will need approval from all parties to lift it."

An official at the ministry's cultural market department, which is responsible for the legislation, denied the report.

"The ministry is not considering lifting the ban," the official, who identified himself only as Bai, told Reuters.

In Tokyo, Sony shares traded 8 percent higher while Nintendo gained over 3.5 percent, outperforming a broadly weaker Nikkei index.

Yoshiko Uchiyama, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment, a unit of Sony, said she could not comment directly on the report.

"Our stance towards business in China has not changed. Of course, we acknowledge China as a promising market for our business, and we are always considering and preparing business opportunities and possibilities (in the country)," she said.

A Nintendo spokesman declined to comment.

Earlier moves suggest Chinese authorities are ready to take a softer line on game consoles.

Last year, Lenovo Group Ltd launched the Eedoo CT510, a motion sensing device similar in concept to Microsoft Corp's Kinect extension for its Xbox game console. Lenovo marketed the Eedoo as an "exercise and entertainment machine".

Video game consoles are banned in China, but online gaming and playing games on mobile devices are both extremely common, which analysts say limits the potential upside for Sony and rival game machine makers.

PFT: Patriots could target Ed Reed

    tim-brownGetty Images

We agree wholeheartedly with the opinions expressed by Peter King in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback and elsewhere regarding the merit (or more accurately lack thereof) of former Raiders receiver Tim Brown?s non-allegation allegation that former Raiders coach Bill Callahan ?sabotaged? a 10-year-old Super Bowl.? But some questions remain as the latest Super Bowl week commences.

First, will 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh be asked about the situation at one of his many media availabilities this week?? Harbaugh, who was a first-year offensive assistant with the Raiders in 2002, wasn?t asked about it on Sunday night when the team arrived.? And given the extent to which the story has faded in recent days, he may not be asked about it at all.

Second, did the Raiders? game plan change two days before the game?? Brown?s ludicrous opinion of sabotage comes from his belief, as a factual matter, that Callahan changed the game plan.? So did he?? There has been no definitive answer provided to that question.

Third, did the Raiders fail to change audibles and line calls?? It has been presumed for nearly a decade that the Raiders didn?t account for the fact that former Oakland coach Jon Gruden knew the code words that would be used at the line of scrimmage on offense.? But Peter King?s dismantling of the sabotage theory in the latest Monday Morning Quarterback extends to the notion that the Bucs knew what the Raiders were planning to do.? The game broadcast, however, contained strong evidence to the contrary.

Tampa Bay safety John Lynch wore a microphone, and he plainly can be heard telling former Bucs defensive backs coach Mike Tomlin after the Raiders fell behind 20-3 late in the first half, ?Mike, every play they?ve run, we ran in practice.? It?s unreal.?

    Said Tomlin, ?I know.?

Whatever the reason, the Buccaneers? dominance was enough, we?re told, to prompt Raiders receiver Jerry Rice to rip the microphone he was wearing during the game from his pads and flush it down a toilet at halftime.

Fourth, given that King believes Brown?s assertion is ?utterly preposterous? and that King is one of the voters for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will this mess keep Brown out for another year?? The voters will swear that they don?t consider anything other than what happens on the field, in accordance with the Hall of Fame?s bylaws.? But as we explained in our one-time-and-one-time-only PFT season preview magazine (which apparently made a cameo appearance several months ago in an episode of Mike & Molly on CBS), the human beings who cast the votes are influenced by the things that tend to influence the decisions made by human beings.

If it?s a close call between Brown and someone else as a given voter makes the excruciating descent from 15 modern-era finalists to up to five modern-era enshrinees, Brown?s assertions could be viewed, consciously or otherwise, as reflecting the kind of disrespect for and misunderstanding of the game that could be the factor pushing that person one way or the other.

There would be no hard proof of it, and none of the voters will risk their vote by proclaiming publicly that they sabotaged Brown?s candidacy in part because of his claim of sabotage.? But it definitely could, in a close case, be a factor ? and we?d never know that it was.

Time to retire chimps in US research labs?

Scientists have a proposal to retire all but 50 research chimpanzees kept in US federal labs. The primates would be sent to 'Chimp Haven,' a new chimp sanctuary in Louisiana. Animal rights activists applaud the move.

    By Janet McConnaughey,?Associated Press / January 23, 2013

A 200-acre site near Shreveport, La., in 2004 when the first phase of construction on Chimp Haven was underway. The NIH Council of Councils Working Group on Tuesday Jan. 22, 2013 approved a proposal, which also calls for major cuts in grants to study chimps in laboratories and no return to breeding them for research.

Government scientists have agreed that all but 50 of hundreds of chimpanzees kept for federally funded research should be retired from labs and sent to a national sanctuary.

The proposal from a National Institutes of Health committee also said all of the chimps should have plenty of room to play and climb.

The NIH Council of Councils Working Group on Tuesday approved the proposal, which also calls for major cuts in grants to study chimps in laboratories and no return to breeding them for research.

Already, nine chimpanzees arrived Tuesday at Chimp Haven outside Shreveport, La., from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's New Iberia Research Center, which no longer has an NIH chimp research contract. Seven more are expected Thursday and another 95 will arrive over the coming months, sanctuary officials said.

The federal agency said in 2011 that it would phase out most invasive research on chimpanzees. The new 86-page recommendation describes how chimpanzees should be kept and what will be needed for any future research. Chimps should be used only if there is no other way to study a threat to human health, and the research should be approved by an independent committee with members from the public, said the Council of Councils proposal, which will be sent to the NIH's director after a 60-day public-comment period.

Animal-rights activists said they were pleased by the recommendations.

"At last, our federal government understands: A chimpanzee should no more live in a laboratory than a human should live in a phone booth," the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a statement.

Chimp Haven was created on 200 acres of a Caddo Parish park in Keithville in northwest Louisiana.

"We should see more than 300 chimpanzees getting moved to the federal sanctuary system," said Kathleen Conlee, the Humane Society of the United States' vice president for animal research issues.

But Conlee said she was disappointed by the recommendation to keep a group of about 50 in case further research on chimpanzees is approved.

"But I'm glad they made clear those animals should be kept to much higher standards than they are currently being kept in," she said.

Chimpanzees should be kept in groups of at least seven, with about 1,000 square feet of outdoor space per chimp ? roughly one-sixth of an acre for a group of seven, according to the proposal.

The space must include year-round outdoor access with a variety of natural surfaces such as grass, dirt and mulch, and enough climbing space to let all members of large troupes travel, feed and rest well above the ground, and with material to let them build new nests each day, the report said.

Chimp Haven's enclosures range from a quarter-acre to five acres, some of them forested and all with climbing structures.

The announcement of its first animals from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's New Iberia Research Center was delayed a day to keep stress on them to a minimum, officials said.

"Understandably, the chimpanzees are nervous when they arrive, and we do everything possible to ease their stress. That includes limiting the number of people in the area to only those who are required to help with the chimpanzees. We also must minimize the risks of the chimpanzees being exposed to communicable diseases," veterinarian Raven Jackson said in the news release.

A $30 million cap on total spending for construction and care of Chimp Haven's retirees has been looming. That would stop NIH from contributing 75 percent of the $13,000 annual cost to care for each federal chimpanzee.

Conlee said the Humane Society will urge Congress to move money now spent on research contracts to Chimp Haven. The sanctuary gives the animals better care for less money than the labs are paid, she said.

Woods atop the leaderboard at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Tiger Woods made one last birdie as the rain picked up strength Friday, and what he left behind was a gloomy forecast for everyone else at Torrey Pines.

He had a two-shot lead at the tournament he already has won six times.

He is driving the ball long and straight, just what he needs to handle the par 5s ? he has played them in 9 under so far.

And when it comes to experience, he has a 74-0 advantage in PGA Tour wins against the next seven guys on the leaderboard.

Woods knows better than to chalk up another win in the Farmers Insurance Open, so when asked about his name atop the leaderboard after a 7-under 65 on the North Course, he was quick to point out, "We have a long way to go."

Even so, this had all the trappings of another Tiger show at Torrey Pines.

Woods didn't miss a shot during a four-hole stretch around the turn on the North Course that included a 5-iron to 5 feet for eagle and a wedge that one-hopped off the pin to set up birdie. It carried him to a two-shot lead over Billy Horschel going into the weekend.

Asked whether he played better when everything was going well in his life, Woods waited out the long question with a short answer.

"I feel good right now," said Woods, who was at 11-under 133. "I'm leading the tournament."

Horschel, who had to go back to Q-school to get his card last year, had a 69 on the South Course to get into the final group.

"It's a good day and I'm excited about tomorrow ? I get to play with Tiger," Horschel said. "I found out when I tapped in for par. I realized he was leading and I was in second place. So yeah, looking forward to that."

For Woods, it was his first outright lead going into the weekend against a full field since the Australian Open in 2011 (he finished third at The Lakes), and his first time atop the leaderboard at Torrey Pines since 2008. Then again, he has only played one time at this event since then when he was just starting to change his swing.

And while this looks ominous for everyone else, Woods with a 36-hole lead ? even at Torrey Pines ? doesn't mean this is over. He had a 34-10 record when he has at least a share of the 36-hole lead, though he has failed to win four of the last six times from that spot.

"Vintage (at)TigerWoods today," Dustin Johnson said on Twitter after finishing eight shots behind.

Woods caught a break in the draw by playing the easier North ? it's about 600 yards shorter ? on a day of light rain, a late breeze and soft conditions. But he kept the ball in play off the tee, and he only got in trouble once. That was on the par-4 eighth hole when he drove into a tough lie in the bunker, and it led to his only bogey.

There's a simple formula for playing the North ? make birdie on the par 5s and pick up a few more on the short par 4s. And that's just what he did.

Woods missed birdie putts inside 8 feet on the opening two holes and was taking baby steps until he took off. It started with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th. He followed with the 5-iron that landed just left of the pin on the 18th, a two-putt birdie on the par-5 first hole, and his wedge that took one hop, struck the flag and settled 4 feet away.

"Drive the ball well here and you're going to probably have four iron shots into the par 5s," Woods said. "You sprinkle that in with probably four or five wedge shots in there, a round of 6- or 7-under par is definitely conceivable."

Brad Fritsch, a rookie from Canada, had a 67 on the South Course to lead the group of six players at 8-under 136. The others were Casey Wittenberg, Steve Marino, Jimmy Walker, Josh Teater and Erik Compton, whom Woods referred to as "remarkable" for being a two-time heart transplant recipient and being on the PGA Tour.

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker didn't fare so well. After opening with a 65 on the North, he made only one birdie and twice took bogey on the par 5s on his way to a 75 that left him seven shots behind. K.J. Choi, who had a 65 on the South Course, couldn't break par on the easier North and had a 73 to fall five behind.

Phil Mickelson struggled to keep his hands dry in the wet weather and finished bogey-bogey on the South for a 71 to make the cut on the number, though his work isn't over. There were 87 players who made the cut at 1-under 143, meaning there will be another cut to top 70 and ties Saturday.

Mike Weir, meanwhile, made the cut for the first time since July 2011 despite a sloppy finish for a 75 on the South. He was tied for 41st at 3-under 141.

Woods is coming off a missed cut in Abu Dhabi last week to start his year.

"I've had beautiful practice sessions at home," he said. "If I can do it there, I can do it out here. Even though last week I played only two days, I felt like I hit the ball well enough to shoot a better score than I did. I had a couple of days to work on it, and I came out here and felt pretty good about it."

The final two rounds move to the South Course, which played about 1? shots harder Friday in the rain. The greens are more receptive, sure, but the course figures to play at full length in wet conditions and at sea level.

"It was amazing how different it played from Wednesday," Walker said. "I played the pro-am here on Wednesday on the South, and you could hardly stop a ball. And today, it didn't matter if you hit a 3-iron in there, it would just stop immediately. You could spin wedges. So it was a lot different, and it played a lot longer too."

Not only have the seven players behind Woods not won on tour, four of them had to get cards this year through either Q-school or the Web.com Tour.

But with 36 holes left, more than just those seven are still in the mix. Nick Watney played the first two rounds with Woods was only four shots behind, along with Ross Fisher of England. Charles Howell III, who has tied for third and lost in a playoff in his two starts this year, had a 72 on the South and was five shots behind.

Horschel wades into a big world Saturday, but he believes he has the experience from when he played the Walker Cup in 2007 at Royal County Down.

There was a guy I competed against three times called Rory McIlroy," Horschel said. "So there may have been 10, 12,000 people following us, and only a couple thousand following the rest of the groups. So I've dealt with crowds. I guess it's a little bit easier playing with Tiger because I guess the group ahead, they move a lot or something. Just hearing what media says. It's going to be exciting."

White House, senators starting push on immigration

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House and a bipartisan group of senators will launch an effort next week to jump-start negotiations to overhaul the immigration system, an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Obama will begin his second-term immigration push during a trip Tuesday to Las Vegas. The Senate working group is also aiming to outline its proposals at about the same time, according to a Senate aide.

Even before those plans are formally unveiled, there is emerging consensus on several components, most notably the need for some kind of pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.

The proposals will commence what is sure to be a contentious and emotional debate following 2012 election results that saw Latino voters turn out in large numbers to re-elect Obama ? a signal to many Republican leaders that the party needs to change its posture on immigration.

The aim of the Senate group is to draft an immigration bill by March and pass legislation in the Senate by August, said the aide, who was not authorized to discuss private deliberations and requested anonymity. The Republican-controlled House would also need to pass the legislation before it went to the White House for the president's signature.

For Obama, a successful push on immigration reform would be a promise kept to the Latino community after he disappointed many by failing to act on the issue in his first term, and it could be central to his legacy. The president met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at the White House Friday to discuss his upcoming proposals.

Following the meeting, lawmakers emphasized the need to act quickly.

"The time to act on comprehensive immigration reform is now," said Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif. "I remain hopeful that my colleagues in Congress can do the right thing and work together to produce legislation that secures our borders, reunites broken families and humanely treats the more than 11 million individuals who want nothing more than (to) achieve the American dream."

Obama pledged to make overhauling the system a top second-term priority.

"I think we have talked about it long enough," Obama said during an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" in December. "We know how we can fix it. We can do it in a comprehensive way that the American people support. That's something we should get done."

Administration officials say Obama's second-term immigration push will continue the principles he outlined during his first four years in office. The basis for the president's plan is expected to be his 2011 immigration reform "blueprint," which calls for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, increased border security, mandatory penalties for businesses that employ unauthorized immigrants and improvements to the legal immigration system.

"What he hopes is that that dynamic has changed," White House spokesman Jay Carney said of Obama. "And there are certainly indications now that what was once a bipartisan effort to push forward with comprehensive immigration reform will again be a bipartisan effort to do so."

For Republicans, tackling immigration reform could be a way to broaden their appeal among Latino voters who are increasingly key to presidential elections. Latino voters accounted for 10 percent of the electorate in November, and 71 percent backed Obama over the 27 percent who voted for Romney.

In the Senate, lawmakers working on the effort include Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Robert Menendez of New Jersey; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Marco Rubio of Florida, according to Senate aides.

A few other lawmakers have also been involved, including Democrat Michael Bennet of Colorado and Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Mike Lee of Utah. It's not clear whether all those involved will sign on to the principles the group hopes to roll out next week.

Details of the Senate proposals remain unclear, but the principles are expected to address a process toward legalizing the status of unauthorized immigrants already in the country; border security; verification measures for employers hiring workers and ways for more temporary workers to be admitted into the country.

On the path to citizenship, Schumer and Graham have in the past supported requiring illegal immigrants to admit they broke the law, perform community service, pay fines and back taxes, pass background checks and learn English before going to the back of the line of immigrants already in the system.

Several of the senators negotiating the immigration principles are veterans of the comprehensive immigration reform effort under then-President George W. Bush. That process collapsed in 2007 when it came up well-short of the needed votes in the Senate, a bitter outcome for Bush and the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democrats' leader on the legislation.

Some Republicans still lament that result as a missed opportunity for the party that could have set the GOP on a different path to reach more Latino voters.

Rubio is a relative newcomer to Senate negotiations on the issue, but he's seen as a rising star in his party and a potential 2016 presidential candidate. As a charismatic young Hispanic leader, his proposals on immigration have attracted wide notice in recent weeks. And as a conservative favorite, unlike McCain or Graham, his stamp of approval could be critical to drawing in other conservative lawmakers.

A Republican aide said that Rubio has made clear in his interactions with the group that he couldn't sign on to proposals that deviated from the principles he himself has been laying out in recent media interviews, including border security first, a guest-worker program, more visas for high-tech workers and enforcement in the workplace. As for the illegal immigrants already in the country, Rubio would have them pay a fine and back taxes, show they have not committed crimes, prove they've been in the country for some time and speak some English and apply for permanent residency. Ultimately, citizenship, too, could be in reach, but only after a process that doesn't nudge aside immigrants already in line, and Rubio hasn't provided details on how long it all might take.

The aide was not authorized to discuss private deliberations and requested anonymity in order to describe them.

An open question for the Senate group has been whether Obama would release an actual bill or just his own principles. Republicans in the group tend to believe that a bill handed down by the White House could seriously complicate the process, spooking the GOP by coming off as a purely political move, since a White House-written bill would have little chance of actually passing.

The White House and Senate Democrats favor addressing immigration through one broad package of legislation, while some Republicans lawmakers prefer to tackle the issue through several separate bills.

Ubuntu Phone Seems To Be The Computing Of Future - Techno Bash

An android and iPhone competitor, Ubuntu is skating to where the puck is going to be. But, with such a bold move, there are significant obstacles to overcome. The soon to be released Ubuntu Phone is paving the way that all smart phones will eventually go. The components required to build the computers become smaller and cheaper, till eventually it was possible to put one on your desk. The computer stayed on the desk until the laptop computer, a smaller, more portable, but just as powerful machine, made it nearly obsolete. And then, the iPhone was released, followed shortly after by Android and the Palm WebOS, and the next step in computing was clear. Mobile computing devices like our phones are the next wave in personal computing. They continue the trend of laptops by being smaller and portable, and exceed by having near ubiquitous Internet access, and by being so portable they can fit in your pocket.

The Ubuntu mobile software, like its OS for desktops, will be open source and built around the kernel Google?created for its Android software. At a press conference in Las Vegas, Canonical , maker of?Ubuntu, demonstrated the mobile software operating on a Galaxy Nexus. With Ubuntu?s smartphone software, users will see a mix of old and new.Ubuntu mobile OS has kept some familiar Android features such as the sideways sweeping gestures and the system status icons including battery life, connection, and volume on the right side of the notification bar. The?Ubuntu software also offers some nice surprises like larger App icons and thumb gestures that access content and active app switching.? The Ubuntu Phone is expected to be released in late 2013 and will be preloaded on Android phones.. Phones will ship with both Chromium and Firefox browsers and run Linux native apps written in QML and web apps written in HTML5, CSS, and Javascript.Ubuntu Phone

Family in Sandy-damaged home suffers in deep freeze: 'This is ...

More than 400 residences in Staten Island still don't have electricity because their homes are too damaged, and many are taking refuge in warming tents. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Dee and Scott McGrath were huddled under two blankets, both wearing hooded sweatshirts and pants, with an electric heater by their bed. Dee heard her daughter coughing through the night from the room next door and feared she was getting sick.

Though they?d tried to cover up the open gaps between the wood on the first floor of their gutted home, which was inundated by 11 feet of water during Hurricane Sandy, the chill of a deep freeze sweeping New York was seeping in. Downstairs, it was just below 20 degrees. Upstairs, where they?ve restored heat, it was only 60,?the couple said as they recounted the Wednesday night experience.

Code snippet for US news stories:

The McGraths are not alone in their suffering: Though the number of those living without heat is a hard number for officials to gauge, more than 9,000 dwellings remain without electricity in the city, according to data from the power providers.

?It?s rough, it?s very stressful, it?s very depressing. And you get the anxiety of not knowing when your work is going to be done and when your house is going to be back,? Scott, 45, said Thursday afternoon, taking a break from working on the electrical wiring in his home. ?You have emotional-like panic attacks in your head, you?re thinking of what you have to do next to make sure your family don?t die or get sick with the flu and stuff ? you can?t be exposed outdoors all day and this is being exposed outdoors.?

Some 20,000 residential buildings in the city were left with some damage or disruption to their utilities after Sandy. A city program, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, had restored utility services and provided replacement equipment to more than 11,800 residences as of Jan. 21, while some 7,000 are awaiting help. Work on about 1,900 dwellings is under way.

The McGraths moved back in two weeks after the storm, but they only got heat on Jan. 2. Before then, they had been running nine to a dozen electric heaters off two generators at a cost of $80 a day. Until this weekend, they had to take showers and use the toilet at a neighbor?s home.

    Miranda Leitsinger / NBC News

Dee Young-McGrath and her husband, Scott McGrath, stand Thursday in the first floor of their gutted home where the temperature dropped to just under 20 degrees the night before. It's hard to get the rebuilding done in such cold weather, they said.

?My poor daughter is sick in bed right now running a fever and I have to have an electric heater running for her besides my heat,? he said of Crystal, 21, a meter reader for one of the city?s power providers, Con Edison of New York. Upstairs the thermostat showed it was 60 degrees. ?It?s pretty sad and she?s wrapped up in two blankets.?

Although the McGraths? home received help from the federal government's Rapid Repairs program, Scott said the program?s subcontractors had botched the installation work, with leaks springing in the pipes when the boiler was turned on. His brother, a plumber, fixed the problems.

They got electricity earlier, on Christmas Eve. But the work done by Rapid Repairs was ?basic,? Scott said, leaving them with few outlets, such as just two in the kitchen. He was installing more outlets on Thursday before eventually putting up insulation and dry wall.

The couple has done almost all of the repair work on their own, finishing the bathroom downstairs, with a shower and toilet, this weekend. Though it was an achievement they had looked forward to, the timing couldn?t have been worse with the onset of the subzero temps this week.?

?It is completely unbearable to step foot out of my bedroom,? said Dee Young-McGrath, 42. ?It?s like torture to sit on an ice-cold toilet. And the shower, I mean, we have holes in the wall back there ? it?s just excruciating.?

The couple, who have lived in the home for 10 years, said they stayed for several reasons, including that FEMA housing options were either too far away or in troubled city neighborhoods, and many places wouldn?t take dogs. They have a 10-year-old dog, Brownie, a chocolate lab and border collie mix.

?Their (FEMA) answer was to tell me to put my dog in a shelter. That is my family. ? I?d rather sleep in my car before I put my dog in a shelter,? Scott said as he called a tail-wagging Brownie ?Daddy?s little girl? and gave her a kiss.

They also stayed since they?d heard stories of vandalism.

?Whatever I have left, I want to keep,? he said. ?You stay here to protect your property, what?s left.?

Though the days are long and dark for them, there was a little levity when Katie jokingly offered a reporter a cold drink. One wall on the first floor is lined with bottles of water, a two-liter orange soda and a few energy drinks.

Katie said they were lucky to have a roof over their heads when others still did not and were sheltering at warming centers, but they both said the stress and depression has been great.

Scott said on some days he could not motivate himself to get out of bed and his hands would tremble when he was overcome with anxiety. They have been given sick leave from their jobs at Con Edison, where he is an investigative inspector and she an instructor, due to the emotional toll. The cold, with a forecast that it may snow on Friday or over the weekend, is making it even worse.

?I have ? panic attacks, anxiety at night, wondering what?s going to happen to my house. You know, running electric heaters, I start to panic, thinking that I?m going to cause a fire,? Scott said.

?This is not a way (for) a person to live,? he said. ?It?s depressing to come here every day and you?re living in this house.?

NBC Nightly News' Katy Tur contributed to this report.

    Legend: Inception of Discord (suggestions/ideas)

    Here's the general run-through of the point-system:

The system represents the character's ability to "screw" with their fate to a point. The better/more badass the post is, the longer the character lives, relatively speaking. The points are a measure of which a person is allowed to spend to either one of three ways.

The first use is to spend the points to survive and/or dodge any attack. The second is to spend a point to gain an attack that is undodgeable. The third categorizes miscellaneous actions, such as further enhancing one's abilities past their limits for a single "scene."

There isn't a limit of how many points one may have at any one time, nor is there a limit of how many points can be placed into the system's "music box". The only limits would be one's writing ability and the decay system, which is as follows: If for every so many posts that one does not use a point, then on the next post, they would receive "point decay", which would decrease the number of points that they have by 20%, and then by an additional 20% for every post that they don't use a point in, until the Decay percentage locks out at 100%. These points would be subtracted from the character's total pool of points, but not from the music box, and it is impossible to go below 0 points.

The "music box" is sort of an investment box, of which points can be placed into it, and won't be affected by decay, but can't be used for actions either. When a point is placed into the box, the character gains the option of using their "designated theme song". When this "action" occurs, they can spend points that they had as if they had double the points. However, when they do use their points in this fashion, after the scene that they activated their music box, all points that they had invested in both the box and the pool will be reset to zero.

Think of it as a charge-up skill that characters would have. But this also includes any villains, whether NPC or played by another member. And if you played Pathfinder, D&D, it's similar to the Hero Points system that those games have.

They still won't be allowed to control other's actions, level entire buildings, those sorts of things, if that was what you were asking. And then there's also the option of opting out from even using the system at all, which basically allows a character not to worry about the point-system (there will be an OOC thread that will take care of keeping track of the points).

As for the villains, they would be of different mindsets. Some would be in it just to cause war, while some would just try to expose that magic still exists. And then you have the odd one who just wants to watch the world burn (joker reference).

And for the cover-ups? Most of the incidents would be covered up with a usual "it was tech malfunction" or that "there was an earthquake that had occurred", those merely being examples.

Anything else that might need clarification? Any possible suggestions?

Bombardier shares fall as rival Embraer scoops big U.S. jet order

(Reuters) - Shares in Bombardier Inc fell on Thursday on news that rival planemaker Embraer had landed a large order to supply regional jets in the U.S. market, traditionally a strong market for Bombardier.

Brazil's Embraer on Thursday clinched a deal worth up to $4 billion to supply larger regional jets for American Airlines' regional network.

Embraer and Republic Airways Holdings Inc signed a contract for 47 E-175 jets, with an option to acquire an additional 47 aircraft. The new aircraft will be operated by Republic under AMR Corp's American Eagle brand.

Although losing the deal is disappointing for Canadian-based Bombardier, Republic and Embraer have a long history together, making it difficult for Bombardier to displace the incumbent, PI Financial analyst Chris Murray said.

"It is not that there aren't other orders that we will still expect to see out of the U.S.," he said.

Other U.S. airlines that are considering renewing their regional fleets in the short- to medium-term are United Continental and U.S. Airways Group Inc . A senior executive at Embraer said on Thursday the company expects more demand from American Airlines even after the Republic order.

Shares in Bombardier fell as much as 2 percent on the Toronto Stock Exchange early on Thursday. By midday, the stock was down 4 Canadian cents, or 1 percent, at C$4.09, against the trend of an overall stronger market.

PFT: Brady fined $10K for Reed kick

    Rex Ryan, Woody JohnsonAP

The man who claims he had no role in the decision to trade for quarterback Tim Tebow is now reportedly pulling the strings on a trade for cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Jets owner Woody Johnson, who apparently doesn?t want to be perceived a meddler, definitely isn?t afraid to meddle.

Otherwise, Johnson wouldn?t want anything when it comes to Tebow, Revis, or any other player other than what the employees he has hired to handle football matters want.? If new G.M. John Idzik decides it makes sense to move Revis as he enters the final year of a contract that will void if Revis is on the roster the day after next year?s Super Bowl, then that?s what Woody should want.? If Idzik decides otherwise, that?s what Woody should want.

Are we still surprised they couldn?t give the job away?

A trade during the offseason won?t be easy.? Revis is recovering from a torn ACL.? There?s no way to know whether he?ll be the same guy that he was until he?s back on the field.? While Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was better than ever after an ACL tear, Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth never was the same again ? and ultimately retired.

If the goal is maximizing the return, the Jets should keep working Revis back to 100 percent, hope he comes back as good (or better) than ever, then dangle him before the trade deadline during the 2013 season to a contending team.? Of course, that approach could create an unwanted in-season distraction, especially if the Jets end up being better than expected next year.

The problem is that, now that the cat is reportedly out of the bag, Revis and his agents will look for clarity from the Jets.? And anyone who trades for him won?t want to give what the Jets will want without protection against Revis walking away next February.

Then there?s the cap hit.? While the Jets would avoid $6 million that is owed to Revis in 2013 ($3 million base salary, $1 million reporting bonus, $1 million roster bonus, $1 million workout bonus), they?ll carry a $3 million charge for his 2011 option bonus and absorb a $6 million cap acceleration if he is traded before June 1.

In other words, for a pre-June 1 trade, he?ll cost $9 million against the cap whether he?s on the team or not.

After June 1, the cap hit would drop to $3 million in 2013, with another $6 million applying to the cap in 2014.

There?s no easy solution to this one, especially now that the plans are supposedly known.? At least it will add some spice to Idzik?s introductory press conference, which has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

Maybe he?ll make like Rex and hop a plane to the Bahamas instead.? With an owner who seems to want to be the G.M., it would be hard to blame Idzik.

Genome Donators Can Be Sleuthed Out

    60-Second Science

Using publicly available information, researchers found they could figure out the identities of 50 individuals who had loaned their genes to science. Karen Hopkin reports.

    More 60-Second Science

Since the first human genome sequence was published, thousands of people have submitted their DNA for scientific analysis. They made these donations anonymously?or so they thought. Now, using publicly available information, researchers found they could figure out the identities of 50 individuals who had loaned their genes to science. Their results, although not the names of the people, are in the journal Science. [Melissa Gymrek et al, Identifying Personal Genomes by Surname Inference]

Biomedical research depends on the participation of human subjects, and issues of privacy have always been a concern. When scientists share genomic data, they first strip away identifying information, like the individual?s name and date of birth. But is that really enough?

Researchers looked at a specific set of markers in genomes whose sequences were in a public database. And they found that by matching up these markers with sequences that people had submitted to genealogy web sites, they could identify some of the genome donors? relatives and, with a bit more sleuthing, come up with their actual names.

Of course, many people now post online accounts of what?s on their minds or even on their menus. But even those who are relatively relaxed about their privacy might think twice about their genomes going public.

Fresh fears over Spain deficit, as finance tax clears hurdle < Spanish ...

Fresh worries surfaced Tuesday over Spain's public finances as the EU warned of missed deficit targets on the day 11 eurozone countries got the go-ahead to work on taxing financial transactions.

The leaders of Germany and France promised new moves to strengthen the eurozone, as the currency club that has laboured so hard to stabilise its debt-laden reputation on money markets settles down under a new Dutch chairmanship.

The eurozone is currently labouring under a record unemployment rate of almost 12 percent, but even Greece is doing its bit, actually beating a deficit target set with its EU-IMF creditors over the course of 2012.

However, the new Eurogroup chair, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, cannot yet expect an easy ride during his 30-month initial mandate compared to that of his predecessor, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.

Headaches including the tricky nature of negotiating over a bailout request made last summer by Cyprus, and a request by Portugal for a longer repayments schedule on its bailout -- which it hopes, like Ireland, can help it get back into commercial finance markets even this year.

Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan said the 17 eurozone countries had agreed to Portugal's request, and EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn acknowledged that a successful return to the markets for these two countries "is both in the interests of themselves and, indeed, certainly in the interests of the entire European Union."

But Spain remains the biggest active threat, not least as Dijsselbloem's sole candidacy to head the Eurogroup was opposed by Spain in the overnight vote.

Spain, a member of the eurozone, is now Europe's youth unemployment black spot, with a rate of about 57 percent.

And the European Commission warned on Tuesday that the country's 2012 and 2013 public deficit targets are again veering off target.

Spain was supposed to keep the 2012 figure to within 6.3 percent of gross domestic product, but a Commission report said this would "probably not" be achieved.

Brussels publishes full economic forecasts for the whole European Union on February 22, but expects Spain to register a deficit of 8.0 percent in 2012 and 6.1 percent again this year.

The previous target for 2013 was 4.5 percent.

However there was good news from Greece, which said it had narrowed its public deficit to 8.1 percent in 2012, marking a rare improvement over targets pledged to its EU-IMF creditors.

Portugal also said it had met its 2012 public deficit target of 5.0 percent.

Spanish Finance Minister Luis De Guindos said the "complaint" over Dijsselbloem was simple, moaning that Madrid is "under represented in the European institutions" and that this was "unjust."

Almost all the top eurozone posts are now held by nationals of members which hold top triple-A credit ratings.

The Netherlands, though, is sitting out the moves to launch a tax on financial transactions.

However, the 27 European Union ministers voted as a whole to give 11 countries led by Germany and France the green light to continue work on the scheme, although not yet to legislate for it.

Diplomats said that Britain was relaxed about the issue, and technically abstained even though it has long argued forcibly against the tax.

"It is a milestone for EU tax policy, as it paves the way for more ambitious member states to progress on a tax file, even when unanimity could not be achieved," said the EU's tax commissioner Algirdas Semeta.

The plans progress under a scheme first used in the field of divorce law and was last year approved a second time in the field of patents.

The Financial Transactions Tax (FTT) was initially proposed by France and Germany, then joined by Austria, Belgium, Greece, Portugal and Slovenia, and later by Italy, Spain, Slovakia and Estonia.

The European Commission will now begin drafting legislation sure to stir up more controversy.

Tips on how to Avoid Computer Virus's ? Jackson Hole Compunet

    virus

When it comes to protecting all the data on your computer, there are certain rules you should really follow.? However, no matter how careful you are when surfing the internet and opening files from an?email, you can still expose yourself to some really bad computer virus?s.? If you do think your computer has?virus, don?t wait on getting it fixed.? The virus could be collecting important data off your computer or sending out emails to everyone in your contact list.? Bring your computer down to Compunet right away and have one of our trained professionals clean up your machine.? By following some simple steps, you can however, reduce your vulnerability to a virus.? Here are some great tips to follow.

    • Never click on a link or attachment in an email that you are not positive is from a trusted source. If you think the e-mail looks suspicious, it probably is. It never hurts to send an email to verify that this is legitimate.
    • Be wary of files with a double extension such as .txt.vb or .jpg.exe. As a default setting, Windows often hides common file extensions, meaning that a program like Paint.exe will appear to you as simply Paint. Double extensions exploit this by hiding the second, dangerous extension and reassuring you with the first, safe extension ? which is utterly meaningless to your computer; your system only recognizes the extension to the extreme right and run the file as such. If a common file type whose extension you never normally see suddenly becomes visible for no apparent reason, right-click on it, select Properties, and look for the complete file name. You may be surprised to find out what kind of extension it really has.
    • Use USB drives with caution. Plugging someone else?s USB drive into your computer (or plugging your own into a computer at, say, an internet caf?) can spread an infection via the drive itself, not the file you?re actually trying to share. Whenever possible, transfer files between machines via email to keep potentially-infected hardware out of the equation.
    • Beware of internet pop-ups. This may seem obvious, but the real danger is that some pop-ups are designed to look like they?ve originated from your computer. If you see a pop-up that looks like Windows (or another trusted program?s) anti-virus software but warns you of a problem that need to be fixed with an extreme level of urgency, it may be a scam. (To be sure, simply close the warning, then open that anti-virus software from your computer to see if the warning is still mentioned.) Other programs report false errors and then offer to fix them if you purchase their software. If you see a new type of anti-virus pop-up that you have not seen before, or if it appears to be from an anti-virus program that you did not install, it is fake. Close the pop up, update your anti-virus program, and run a full scan. Many of these browser-related apps keep temporary files on your computer and can store a virus there. To keep this risk low, make sure you clear your browser?s cache regularly.
    • Beware of unusual emails from companies you do business with. If you receive an email from a company that you otherwise trust requesting information or recommending that you run a particular file, log into your account on that company?s page and see if there?s a notification there as well. Some scammers will get your trust by copying legitimate businesses? email styles and using a similar-sounding reply-to address to lower your guard.? Note that good businesses will never request sensitive information via email, which is one of the least secure ways of communicating.
    • Install an anti-virus program. Paid versions include NOD 32, Norton, McAfee, F-Secure, and Sophos. Free versions include AVG, Avast, Comodo, BitDefender, and Avira AntiVir. Make sure you keep your virus definitions updated and run a full system scan weekly.? Note: just like anything in this world, you get what you pay for.? To get a truly reliable anti-virus program, you need to pay for it.? Compunet recommends NOD32 from ESET.
    • Install an anti-spyware program. Ad Aware SE, Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, and Spybot Search and Destroy operate against internet malware and spyware that anti-virus programs overlook. Just like anti-virus software, keep it updated and do a full system scan weekly.
    • Use a firewall. Either make sure your Windows Firewall is turned on (run a search for Windows Security Center on your computer to configure) or install a trustworthy firewall program to help block unwanted internet traffic. Note that you should not run two firewalls at the same time, as this will cause errors and can actually make your computer more vulnerable. If you?ve purchased or downloaded another firewall, make sure to disable Windows Firewall.
    • Set up your Windows Update to automatically download patches and upgrades. This will allow your computer to automatically download any updates to both Windows and Internet Explorer. These updates fix security problems and block many spyware programs and viruses. Note that viruses sometimes piggyback onto trusted updates to infect your computer; however, this is much more typical of outdated updates, as they are less closely monitored. Therefore, it?s best to keep your updates as current as possible.
    • Consider switching to a different web browser. Some web browsers are more customizable than others, allowing you more control over pop-ups, ads, tracking, and other concerns that all of us face on the internet. Firefox, for example, has a large array of privacy- and security-related add-ons that will allow you to reclaim control over your web experience.
    • ?Google it. When in doubt about an email, file, warning, email address, advertisement, or anything else that seems suspect, do an online search to see what other people are saying. Throw in the word ?scam? to weed out results that may have been placed there by the very people who are trying to cheat you.
