Bob Arum talks about Marquez vs. Pacquiao ? Boxing News

Hall of Famer promoter of Top Rank Bob Arum believes Juan Manuel Marquez will fight against Timothy Bradley, if Manny Pacquiao chooses a rematch against Miguel Cotto. Arum is hoping for Pacquiao to select a fourth encounter against Juan Manuel Marquez, as he believes it will be a huge sell-out.

?If it's Cotto and Pacquiao, then Bradley and Marquez will fight each other. That is correct. That's not wrong. That's logical, and the fighters have agreed to that,? said Arum in a recent interview.

Bob Arum was in the Philippines some days back meet the Filipino fight king. Arum wanted Pacquiao to decide on his opponent so he could start the promotional process but their meeting ended with no decision. Pacquiao still has not decided his opponent for either November 10 or December 1. He has three fighters he can from, which include Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto and Timothy Bradley.

?Now, the question is...Manny is not reluctant to fight Cotto, but Cotto may be reluctant to fight Manny. That's what we'll have to see. So the Cotto people will get back to me tomorrow or Friday.?

?Manny will make a decision by the end of the week. And then, we'll go from there,? said Arum.

Manny lost his WBO welterweight title to Timothy Bradley on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight ended with a controversial split decision win for the American, raising criticism from fans, fighters and analysts from all around the world.

The World Boxing Organisation even went for a fight review with a five-judge panel. The panel awarded Pacquiao as winner of the bout by a wide margin. Later on, Pacquiao promised his fans that he would bring the title home and urged them to calm down.

On the other hand, Bradley has been eager to face Pacquiao in a rematch, since he feels dejected over the way boxing fans have turned against him. According to Bradley, it was not his fault if the judges announced him the victor. Bradley wants to face Pacquiao once again and win the showdown in a more decisive manner to prove his mettle.

The Apollo 11 Landing Site Superimposed on a Baseball Diamond

Our moon landing may have been grand, but our astronauts did not go far.

Apollo11_baseball2.jpg

As we've reflected on Neil Armstrong's death* and the Curiosity Rover's arrival on Mars, I've found myself trying to comprehend two radically different scales: 1) the sheer immensity of our solar system and 2) the tiny scale of our actual missions to other celestial bodies.?

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to think in the hundreds of thousands (or millions) of miles. At a certain size, the numbers seem so large they become arbitrary.?

The second scale, though, is graspable. The problem is that we don't have an intuitive sense of distance on the Moon or Mars. Particularly with Curiosity, we have nothing we can use as a reference size. The same is true for certain Apollo photographs, particularly because they've been distorted by the lens of time, too.

So, I appreciate that Maria Popova brought back this fantastic visualization of the Apollo 11 mission at Ex.plore.com. It presents the mission's travels superimposed on a baseball diamond. German space enthusiast Thomas Schwagmeier?created the map for NASA's History office and it's not only revealing, but beautiful. The original "traverse map" on which it was based is seen below. The 'Sweet Spot' of Investing: 3 Cheap Small-Cap Stocks with the ...

Small-cap value stocks have consistently outperformed all other categories of stocks.

That?s the message coming from the industry?s most respected academic and financial institutions.

Small-cap value stocks outperformed the general market by 4.3% annually from 1926-1997, according to Morningstar?s registered investment adviser subsidiary Ibbotson Associates. Leading investment firm Vanguard has also published research showing that small-cap value outperformed large-cap value, blended and growth portfolios from 1927-2004.

But it?s not just a generally bullish trend that has carried this group. University of Chicago finance professors Kenneth French and Eugene Fama of the popular French-Fama asset pricing model ? a valuation strategy that looks for small-cap stocks that are in value territory ? concluded that small-cap value stocks outperformed other classes during recessions as well. Another report by Fund Evaluation Group highlighted how small-cap value has outperformed all other groups by a wide margin.

This trend has been on display in the past 12 years. The chart below and shows how the iShares Russell 2000 Index (IWM) of small cap stocks has destroyed the major averages, returning 85% to the S&P 500?s 3% loss.

There are two reasons why small caps offer the potential for such large returns. The first is just a simple matter of math, where companies starting from a base of lower sales and operations have opportunity to grow many times over. This is basically like the power of compounding on steroids.

The second factor is imperfect information. Unlike large caps, which can have as many as 25 covering analysts creating research reports, information on small caps is harder to come by. Although this might seem annoying because investors like information about stocks and markets, it creates a big opportunity. Less information, analysis and coverage frequently leads to shares being over or under valued.

Applying the Fama-French model and looking for strong earnings and earnings growth is a great way to separate the winners from the losers.

With this in mind, here are three top small-cap value gems I found?

1. CARBO Ceramics (NYSE: CRR)

CARBO is a basic materials company in the energy services industry with a market cap of $1.7 billion. The company specializes in developing and manufacturing ceramic propant, a substance that drillers use in the extraction process of natural gas commonly referred to as ?fracking.? Much like the general weakness in energy stocks, Carbo?s share price has fallen more than 50% in the past year.

While that may be a setback for current shareholders, the valuation has rarely looked better. With a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 13, returning to the average of 24 in the past 10 years would have shares of Carbo up 90% from current levels.

2. Impax Labs (Nasdaq: IPXL)

This generic and branded drug maker has a market cap of $1.5 billion. The company specializes in drugs for central nervous system disorders, Alzheimer?s disease, attention deficit disorder and Parkinson?s disease. Impax recently reported excellent second-quarter results that included a 36% upside earnings surprise.

Analysts were quick to upgrade their earnings projections, with the full-year 2012 estimate jumping 15% to $2.05. But in spite of those gains, shares only trade for 13 times forward earnings. If Impax returned to just its average valuation of the past 10 years. then shares would jump 34%.

3. Coeur d? Alane Mines (NYSE: CDE)

Coeur d? Alane is a silver miner based in Idaho with mining assets in the United States, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina and Australia. In spite of the price of gold holding in elevated territory, gold stocks have performed terribly in the past year. With Coeur d?Alene trading just above $21, shares are well off the 52-week high of $30.99.

This probably has a lot to do with weakness in the current-year estimate, falling 69 cents in the past 90 days to $1.26 per share. But longer-term, the next-year estimate still looks great, pegged at $2.63, a bullish 108% growth projection. That is a big opportunity for investors taking a longer-term view.

Risks to Consider: Small-cap stocks are known for extreme volatility. Although many small caps grow into mid- and large-caps, there are plenty of others that fail or go out of business. Investors buying small-cap stocks should be ready for short-term volatility in order to have a chance at outsized gains in the long run.

Action to Take ?> These three undervalued small-cap stocks are in position for big long-term gains as each company advances through early and medium stages of growth. Investors who are not afraid of some volatility should snap up shares while they?re still cheap.

'Blue moon' on same day as Neil Armstrong service

(AP) ? There's a rare 'blue moon' on Friday, a fitting wink to Neil Armstrong by the cosmic calendar.

That's the day of a private service for Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, who died last Saturday in Ohio at age 82.

A blue moon occurs when there's a second full moon in one calendar month. It won't happen again until July 2015. The full moon cycle is 29.5 days so a blue moon is uncommon and has come to mean something rare. The moon actually won't be colored blue.

Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb said the moon is far more important to lovers, literature and folklore than to science.

Armstrong's family has suggested paying tribute to him by looking at the moon and giving the astronaut a wink.

The Odds of War With Iran Increase to 40 Percent | Only Fresh News ...

Our expert panel gauges the odds that the United States or Israel will strike the Islamic Republic in the next year.

dial_40.pngThe probability of conflict with Iran is now at 40 percent, according to The Atlantic's Iran War Dial.

We've assembled a high profile team of experts from?the policy world, academia, and journalism to periodically predict the chances that Israel or the United States will strike Iran in the next year. For more on the Iran War Dial and the panelists, visit our FAQ page.

Peace remains more likely than war. But the chances of conflict have ticked upward for the second month in a row, from 36 percent in June, to 38 percent in July, and now 40 percent in August.

This month, three of the panelists offered comments explaining why there was a serious risk of war.

Shibley Telhami, the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland, sees the rhetorical battle between Israel and Iran, and Israel's desire to protect its reputation, as potentially powerful forces for war.

In my opinion, the chance of an Israeli attack has slightly increased since the last estimate. It is still?uncertain whether or not the Israeli posture is a mere bluff or a function of a real desire to attack Iran under the right?circumstances. But in a world where perception of power is sometimes almost as important as power itself, the rhetorical escalation between Iran and Israel, and the seeming rise in Iran's influence in hosting the Non-Aligned Movement summit and gaining the important?participation?of Egypt's new president, have created a new challenge for Israel. Israel's deterrence posture is very a much a function of how strong Arabs and Muslims believe it is in comparison to its enemies.

For now, there are many who have come to believe a view expressed by one of the readers of Aljazeera.net: "For the second week in a row, Israelis are demonstrating in Tel Aviv in front of the?minister?of war, Ehud Barak, opposing his?statements regarding the waging of war on Iran, as they are very?scared of the?consequences of an Iranian [counter-]attack. They chanted that Barak and Netanyahu would hide in fortified?hideouts?while the Israeli people will be totally destroyed by an Iranian attack....Shimon Peres and others oppose an Israeli strike against Iran because of the fear of the consequences of the Iranian counter-attack which will render Israel's very existence in the future unknown."

So add to all the other calculations that?Israelis?have to make, this one: If they don't attack, people in the region will see their refrain to be a direct function of?Iran's?growing power and Israel's?weakness--something that Israelis have always seen as undermining their deterrence. This is why I had expressed the view that rhetoric matters?more?than politicians sometimes know. The outcome in this case may be?disastrous.

Dalia Dassa Kaye, a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation, also believes that Israel's concerns over protecting its credibility may heighten the odds of war.
?
The main variable in weighing the likelihood of a military attack against Iran in the coming year is the cost-benefit assessment of such an option in Israel. Unfortunately, Israelis who believe the advantages of attacking Iran outweigh the dangers may have the upper hand at the moment, making the odds of an attack higher now than in previous months.
?
Yes, the majority of Israel's military and security establishment oppose an attack (preferring the United States take the lead instead) and the Israeli public is divided and wary of a strike without U.S. support. There is also broad understanding among Israel's security elites that a military strike can only slow but not stop Iran's program and may only give Iran more incentive to reconstitute its program, much as Saddam Hussein did after Israel attacked Iraq's nuclear reactor. For this reason, many speculate that the recent spike in Israeli war talk is more bluff designed mainly to elicit even tougher international and American actions against Iran. But it would be a mistake not to take Israeli threats seriously this time.
?
The leaders most associated with favoring a military option and the ones who could ultimately make the decision--Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak--have staked their domestic and international reputations on these threats. They are not just talking about war but they are asking the Israeli population to prepare for it. And Israel is telling the United States and the international community that diplomacy and sanctions have run their course.
?
Despite the unprecedented levels of U.S. assistance and military cooperation with Israel in recent years, Netanyahu's government does not appear convinced that the United States will deal with Iran down the road (i.e., launch a military attack) if Israel holds off now, when it believes it has the best operational ability to set back Iran's program before the so-called 'zone of immunity' kicks in. ?Israeli leaders may also believe they will be more immune from American censure if they act during a presidential election.
?
As a consequence, Israel may be conditioning its own society and the world for military action. Israeli leaders must understand how their threats at a certain point lose their credibility, both among their own population and abroad, if they never act on them. The effectiveness of such threats in ramping up international pressure against Iran in order to stave off an Israeli attack also begins to diminish at a certain point, and we may be reaching that point.
?
Some prominent Israeli analysts have recently suggested an exit strategy from Israel's escalation of military threats--get the United States to more forcefully and explicitly commit to military action if Israel holds off attacking Iran now. But boxing the United States into commitments to take military action against Iran would be a dangerous way to avoid an Israeli attack. The risks and drawbacks of military action that have led many Israelis to oppose this option are just as pertinent to a U.S. strike. Let's hope we can find other ways to convince the Israelis that a military strike against Iran is a bad idea. But assuming the Israelis aren't serious is not an option.

Ken Timmerman, executive director of the Foundation for Democracy in Iran, sees a "dramatic uptick" in the odds of war in recent weeks.
It is warranted by a volume of recent statements from top Israeli leaders warning about an impending decision on whether to strike Iran. Israel has made clear that it views Oct. 1 as a "threshold" for Iran's nuclear weapons capability, since that is when the IAEA estimates Iran will have enriched enough 20% uranium to make at least one 1st generation nuclear explosive device after further enrichment. Since the IAEA has also concluded that Iran has tested all the non-nuclear components for an implosion device, this clearly is a key capability. By most estimates, Iran will be able to carry out further enriching to weapons grade in somewhere between 6 to 8 weeks.

Israel has two parallel fears. The first is that the spinning centrifuges will produce an imminent Iranian nuclear capability. The second is that the failure to strike Iran--after all of Israel's tough language--will destroy Israel's credibility so that its promises and threats will no longer be believed. Would a country really fight a war to protect its reputation? The single biggest reason why the United States fought the Vietnam War for eight years, with 58,000 American deaths, was the hope of avoiding a humiliating defeat and defending American credibility.

These days, it's back to school, then shopping

Samantha Paradise is starting eighth grade in Manhattan next week, but she won?t be decked out in all new gear on the first day.

At 13, Samantha doesn?t want to be stuck with untrendy items, so she will wait to see if the Superga sneakers that were cool at summer camp are still in fashion, and whether her classmates choose JanSport backpacks or revive the Longchamp and LeSportsac bags from last year. ?I don?t want to be the only one wearing a different kind of backpack,? she said.

In a shift that is upending retailers? plans, many children, teenagers and their parents are delaying their school purchases. A desire to get the trends right accounts for some of the hesitation. But retailers and analysts say the sluggish economy and unusually hot weather have also made for a surprisingly slow start to the back-to-school spending season, one that was expected to be the strongest since before the recession.

If people do not go to stores once schools start, it will be bad news for an economy heavily dependent on consumer spending to stay afloat. And the postponed spending is complicating how stores stock, promote and sell their back-to-school items, some of which have been on the shelves for almost two months.

Charles M. Holley Jr., chief financial officer of Wal-Mart, said stores were seeing customers ?wait until school starts, and they don?t buy things until they absolutely have to.? Office Depot?s head of retail, Juan Guerrero, said many shoppers were even holding off on buying staples like pens and notebooks.

?People are waiting for deals to occur,? Mr. Guerrero said.

Related story: Sending your kid back to school is going to cost you

The consequences could be serious if sales do not rebound. The back-to-school season is the second-largest sales period for retailers, after the winter holiday period, and it offers a spate of new designs and a firm reason for shoppers to head to stores. Beyond the profits retailers make from back-to-school sales, what is popular and what is not provides an important barometer as they prepare for the holidays.

This month, when the National Retail Federation surveyed consumers with school-age children, less than 8 percent had completed their back-to-school shopping, the lowest figure in four years. More than a quarter of respondents said they had not done any shopping, and by that point, school had already started in cities from Georgia to Arizona.

Retailers trying to cope
J. C. Penney is trying to cope by adding styles that will go on the racks in early September. Adrienne Tennant, an analyst with Janney Capital Markets, said Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy and American Eagle Outfitters had extended sales to attract later shoppers. Looking to next year, the teenage store Hot Topic is rethinking its back-to-school timing.

?The post-back-to-school numbers are up, and the pre-back-to-school numbers are down a little bit,? said Lisa Harper, chief executive of Hot Topic. ?Next year, we?ll probably delay.?

Liz Sweney, J. C. Penney?s chief merchant, said that while the back-to-school season had been slipping into late August and early September for a couple of years, the trend was more pronounced this year.

?A few weeks into school, a couple things happen,? she said. ?Weather happens ? it gets cooler ? and kids obviously see what their friends are wearing, particularly for teens, and then they go back to the stores.?

J. C. Penney has been running a free-haircut promotion since the beginning of August to attract early shoppers, but it is also stocking up for later shoppers. Ms. Sweney said the retailer had ordered a wider selection of merchandise to arrive in early September than it did last year. And as the fall goes on, it will emphasize layering pieces, like hoodies and varsity-style jackets, that students can add to what they have already purchased.

But not all retailers have been as nimble.

John D. Morris, an analyst with BMO Capital Markets, said the too-early arrival of wintry gear at Abercrombie & Fitch was among the reasons the company performed poorly in the quarter that ended July 28, with sales at stores open for at least a year falling 10 percent.

?Abercrombie in July was flowing in heavier-weight goods ? down vests when it?s 95 degrees out, sweaters, outerwear, jackets,? Mr. Morris said.

Ms. Tennant, the Janney analyst, said retailers that extended their August sales were most likely reacting to a slower start to August than they expected.

Later start dates
Later school start dates are one possible explanation. Mr. Guerrero of Office Depot and Ms. Harper of Hot Topic said that a number of school districts near where they had stores were starting later this year than last.

But students may also be waiting to shop this year in part because trends are so definite that there is little room for error, Ms. Tennant said. (No one wants to show up in high-top sneakers and a chartreuse sweatshirt on the first day of school when everyone else has left the ?80s trend behind.)

Older students, especially, seem to be waiting until after Labor Day, most likely so they can see what their friends are wearing, said Cathy Beaudoin, president of fashion for Amazon.

Ms. Tennant and Mr. Morris said colored jeans (which became ubiquitous in the spring but are still selling well), printed denim, pleated skirts and dots and floral patterns were currently popular among teenagers.

?Especially when you have a momentous change in fashion,? Ms. Tennant said, ?with young girls, when you?re going into a big trend season, the early adopters will certainly be there, but the fashion followers will buy some stuff to start themselves off with, but go back to school and make sure they got the right color, the right fit and the right trend.?

Samantha Paradise, the Manhattan eighth grader, said that while she liked a lot of the trends she had seen in magazines and online, that was not enough to get her into stores before classes started.

?I?m looking to wait,? she said.

Balsamic Pasta Salad with Grilled Veggies

Some would think that grilling season is almost over.? For us, however, it?s far from over.? It neverreally ends at my house.? A couple of winters ago Kansas City found itself in the midst of some crazy snowstorms and several feet of snow on the ground, and this happened several times.? Said snow did not stop my husband from grilling.

We just love to grill?well, Paul loves to grill.? He?s truly talented when it comes to grilling.? He (unlike me) takes his time and is so thoughtful when he picks out flavors to use and how hot he wants the coals.? Yes, coals, he will only grill on our charcoal Weber grill.

And when we decided to stay in on a recent Friday night, we picked a menu of grilled chicken and veggies.? And Paul picked this Star Fine Foods olive oil out of the cabinet.? I took this as the hint that it was and I?m so glad that I did.? These infused oils are top-notch.? The infused oil was perfect for these veggies and even better with the pasta salad?.which I made the following day with the leftover grilled veggies.? And Star Fine Foods is offering a fun giveaway, including balsamic vinegar and olive oil, to one of you, see below to enter!

I usually make way too many grilled veggies.? First because I?m always afraid that there won?t be enough.? I end up cutting up a few extra of each because inevitably I?ll end up snacking on a couple of tomatoes and peppers before they even make it to the grill.? But second, because I adore leftover veggies.? I?d had this balsamic pasta salad on my mind for days and I couldn?t imagine any better addition that the leftover grilled veggies!

1/4 tsp. pepper
2 cups grilled veggies (I used leftover grilled veggies, see note below)
2 ounces goat cheese crumbles, optional

Directions:

Cook pasta according to package directions.

Meanwhile, mix the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, thyme, salt and pepper in a large bowl.

Drain the pasta and add to the bowl with the balsamic vinaigrette. Stir well to coat the pasta. Add the leftover grilled vegetables on top and sprinkle with goat cheese.

Cassie?s Notes:
This pasta salad can be served hot or cold. Leave out the cheese for a vegan adaptation.

When grilling the vegetables, we used Star Fine Foods garlic-infused olive oil, dried thyme, dried sage, salt and pepper and grilled them in a grilling basket for 15-20 minutes, tossing the veggies often. They get a nice char and grilled flavor and cook very evenly. Store the grilled vegetable leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container until making this pasta salad.

Alternately, you can roast the vegetables in a large baking dish at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes until tender, tossing often.

Neil Armstrong: A giant leap for modesty

The humility of Neil Armstrong after his moonwalk is a model for a balanced approach to giving credit for great achievements.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / August 27, 2012

Astronaut Neil Armstrong turns towards the lunar module soon after he became the first man to set foot on the moon in July, 1969. He died at age 82 last Saturday.

In this age of celebrity obsession, it is rare for heroic figures to be honored for their humility. Yet the family of Neil Armstrong asked after his death last week that the former astronaut be remembered for his modesty as much as for his accomplishment in landing the Eagle spacecraft on the moon and being the first person to walk on another celestial body.

His famous reluctance to revel in the limelight has set an important marker in a wider debate about the source of all great achievement, or when a person deserves credit for a great deed, discovery, invention, or creative work.

Apple, for example, won a $1 billion suit last week against Samsung for the stealing of patented ideas used in the iPhone. President Obama recently told entrepreneurs that they ?didn?t build? their businesses without the help of government. And almost monthly in the publishing industry, another case of an author plagiarizing a copyrighted work is exposed.

With these kinds of concerns about the origins of useful ideas or acts, Mr. Armstrong?s self-effacing modesty remains instructive.

He said the moon landing in July 1969 was not so much his doing as simply an ?achievement that a third of a million people had been working for a decade to accomplish.? All the scientists, engineers, and others connected to space exploration are the unsung heroes of historic feats in space. His role was significant but perhaps less important than, say, the designing of the Saturn rocket.

Armstrong?s modesty echoes that of Sir Issac Newton, who discovered calculus and the laws of gravitation and later wrote to his rival, Robert Hooke: ?If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.?

Breakthroughs in thought or action are most often built on the past achievements of others. But society is benefited by giving credit and allowing a monopoly privilege to an idea in order to serve a public purpose: encouraging further breakthroughs.

Today?s competition for new ideas in the global economy has become so fierce that it severely challenges the intellectual property system that first arose in the 18th century. A new balance is needed between a right to one?s originality and the free flow of ideas that spurs originality.

Despite Armstrong?s image as a rugged individual who mastered spaceflight, he argued for collaboration in modern-day achievements. His boyhood hero was Charles Lindbergh, another heroic icon of aeronautics; but by the 1960s, science and technology had become too complex to sustain the idea of great solo acts. Even Steve Jobs said his greatest achievement would be leaving behind a team at Apple that can keep coming up with more cool designs.

The very nature of ideas is that they are universal enough for anyone to discover and, once known, can be shared for the benefit of all. Society must decide how much to grant credit or lock in ownership of ideas in order to encourage more progress.

The one time that Armstrong spoke out forcefully after his moon landing was to decry budget cuts to the space program. He spoke of ?our investment? in space exploration. It was as if he once again was noting his own ?small step? in reaching the moon while also paying tribute to the larger cause, a ?giant leap for mankind.?

Those historic words were well chosen by a man who lived them.

What do Yemenis want from the West? Whitening strips, for one thing.

Correspondent Adam Baron becomes a sort of Santa Claus upon return from the United States to his new home in Sanaa, Yemen.

My life has taken a number of unexpected turns since I moved to Yemen last year, but I never expected it to lead me to a Brooks Brothers in downtown Washington, DC. But there I was two weeks ago, picking up an umbrella for one of my neighbors in Sanaa?s old city.?

For whatever reason, my neighbor Hussein, an area elder and former world-class ping-pong player, took an almost immediate liking to me. Within months of my arrival in the Yemeni capital, the 60-something father of 10 had me calling him uncle, rarely allowing me to pass by without summoning me by enthusiastically screaming ?Texas? ? an odd choice for a nickname, since I?ve never set foot in the state.

He also took a liking to my black and white-checkered Brooks Brothers umbrella. Whether due to the memory of the draconian laws of the long-overthrown Imamate, which restricted umbrella use to the upper echelons of Yemeni society, or a genuine admiration for classic American design, he developed an odd fixation with it. Having spent a few afternoons as a guest in his home, I couldn't refuse his request that I pick him up an umbrella like mine during my brief trip back to the United States last month. ? ??

It was only one of a string of things, from Aspirin to iPhones, I?ve been asked by Yemeni friends and neighbors to transport back to Sanaa. Neighborhood kids have grown to anticipate my returns from abroad, loitering by my door for my eventual appearance with a bag of candy or a box of sweets. As I passed out desserts I picked up from a famous Egyptian bakery during my lengthy layover in Cairo, I felt like some odd derivative of Santa Claus ? a diminutive Italian-American who falls from the sky to deliver sweets during the last days of Ramadan.?

As I devoured baklava and basbousa with my neighbors, I distributed the motley assortment of specific items they had requested. I finally got a bottle of baby aspirin to the older man with a heart condition who lives across the alley from me.

I also managed to get whitening strips to neighborhood teenagers, who have grown increasingly self-conscious about their teeth as they approach marrying age ? qat, the chewing of which is a favorite pastime of male Yemenis, discolors their teeth.

It took a great deal of effort to rebuff their efforts to pay me back, although I?m sure I?ll be milking free dinners from the gift giving spree for months. (I?ll admit, though, that I did make my driver give me $200 dollars for the iPhone I picked up for him, at his request.)

It often seems like conflict zones such as Yemen become merely places where violence happens, not where millions of people live. The humanity of people living there often seems forgotten.?

But as I gently grabbed my new iPad back from the crumb-covered hands of neighborhood children admiring its ?Call to Prayer? app, impressive even to non-Muslims,?and headed out into the night to track down my charmingly eccentric, Brooks Brothers umbrella-loving adopted uncle, the often dominant image of a violence-wracked Yemen ?on the brink? was far from my mind. For a few moments, at least, it was hard to see Yemen as anything other than home.
