Green Machine: Gaggia helps Fresh compete in the 'cafe capital ...

New cafe?s espresso machine has customers talking about bespoke paint job

Ivica Pendaroski (Ivan to his customers) describes his new business, Fresh, as ?a local, casual cafe and lunch place with a deli, offering nice, freshly prepared food at reasonable prices.?? It?s been a big hit with the locals which, since it?s in London?s ?cafe capital,? Twickenham, is no mean feat.? As a big coffee fan, Ivan was determined to offer the best and specified a Gaggia espresso machine.? A green one.

?The green colour was to tie in with the decor,? he says.? ?There is a whole lot of competition around here ? Twickenham seems to be where cafe culture is at, so we decided to offer something different.? We aim to give customers a smart, fresh and relaxed environment, quality food and drink, and decent prices.??

Ivan is using the quality of his coffee to build up his business.? ?We tie it in with promotions ? a free espresso with breakfast, coffee and a croissant for ?2, and so on.? Our coffee is very good, so it?s working really well, generating new business.? It doesn?t cost us much in terms of ingredients and customers really like it.?

Fresh is a small venue, with just 18 seats inside.? During the week it?s mostly take aways, snacks and drinks.? On Saturdays and Sundays there are more diners and they?ll turn the tables two or three times during the day.? ?I guess on average we serve about 100 people every day,? says Ivan.

Customers are attracted by the wide range of home cooked foods Ivan prepares.? ?For example, at breakfast we do full English, but it?s grilled, so it?s not greasy.? People really like our Egg Benedict and Eggs Royale, too.? We do lots of salads and sandwiches ? goats? cheese with roast pepper, courgettes and onion marmalade is a poplar panini.? And I cook daily specials, such as paccheri pasta salad with grilled asparagus, courgettes, broccoli and basil pesto dressing.?

The coffee has to match the great food.? ?I love coffee.? When I started the cafe I knew what I wanted ? not any machine, it had to be a Gaggia.?

Ivan went to specialist supplier Rich Coffee and selected a Gaggia D90.? This two-group head machine, capable of serving up to four espresso shots at once, is a top of the range commercial model.? It has a 13 litre boiler, with a capacity of up to 300 x 150cc shots per hour, and steam wands fitted with turbo nozzles to quickly produce a high quality silky latte milk or creamy cappuccino foam.

?It makes great espresso, it?s very reliable and easy to operate and look after,? he says.? ?We serve all the standards; latte is our best seller, while flat white is the local ?on trend? choice.? We?re now looking at specialty coffees too ? iced, syrups and so on.?

Since Ivan wanted the machine to match the Fresh decor, Rich Coffee arranged to have it painted green.

?Fresh is a really successful business in a very competitive area,? says Richard Millar of Rich Coffee.? ?It?s great to see a start up cafe with a genuinely fresh approach doing so well.? The bespoke paint job on the machine is not as unusual as you might think ? we get quite a few customers asking for it.? It?s specialist work using specialist paints, of course, but it?s an increasingly popular option.?

?The green Gaggia looks great ? customers are always commenting on the look of the machine,? says Ivan.

Fresh Deli & Cafe is at 25 Heath Road, TW1 4AW.

London-based Rich Coffee is an authorised Gaggia distributor.? For more information call 0845 475 0707or visit www.richcoffee.co.uk.

The Gaggia range of espresso coffee machines and ancillary equipment is marketed in the UK by Watermark.? It is available through catering equipment distributors and coffee specialists.? Watermark is currently expanding its distributor network.? For information and brochures phone Gaggia Watermark on 01494 785758, email info@watermark.uk.com or visit www.watermark.uk.com

U.S. Ambassador to Kenya J. Scott Gration resigns over ?differences? with Washington

Kenya, an economic powerhouse in East Africa, is a close U.S. ally in the fight against terrorism, particularly against the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab militia in neighboring Somalia.

Gration?s departure comes amid increasing U.S. concern that al-Shabab and other groups are penetrating the Horn of Africa and using the region as a base to target the West and its allies. Kenyan military forces are fighting the Islamist militants in Somalia, alongside U.S.-backed African Union troops.

Since Kenya sent its troops to Somalia last October, a spate of grenade attacks has harmed the nation?s tourism sector, the second-largest source of foreign exchange after agriculture.

A U.S. Embassy advisory last week warning of an imminent terrorist attack in Kenya?s southern port city of Mombasa stirred tension between Nairobi and the State Department. Worried that the warning could further harm its tourism industry and economic growth, the Kenyan government publicly described it as ?economic sabotage.?

Two weeks ago, Gration was visited in Kenya by the administration?s highest-ranking diplomat on Africa, Assistant Secretary of State Johnnie Carson, a career foreign service officer who served as ambassador to Kenya from 1999 to 2003. Carson first visited Somalia, the highest-ranking U.S. official to do so in nearly two decades.

The son of missionaries, Gration grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo and speaks Swahili, widely used in Kenya and other parts of East Africa.

He spent most of his Air Force career as a fighter pilot, then rose through the ranks to become director of strategy and planning under Marine Gen. James L. Jones, who at the time was NATO?s supreme allied commander. Gration was assigned to brief then-Sen. Barack Obama, and later was asked to accompany Obama as military liaison on a formative trip to Africa. They spent three weeks traveling through South Africa, Kenya, the Darfur refugee champs in Chad and the U.S. military installation in Djibouti.

A few months after the trip, Gration retired from the military and joined the Democratic Party and Obama?s campaign. Gration was a close adviser who was said to have greatly influenced Obama?s thinking about Africa; he later became a special assistant to the president.

From March 2009 to April 2011, Gration was the U.S. special envoy to Sudan. He spawned controversy over his soft-handed leadership style in dealing with the repressive Khartoum government, led by Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who had been indicted on war-crimes charges.

While Gration at the time called his approach pragmatic, critics, including Democratic and Republican members of Congress, charged that Bashir?s regime was manipulating him. They argued that Bashir and his top advisers respond only to pressure, particularly tough multilateral sanction against Sudan. But Gration preferred a more conciliatory approach, using carrots over sticks.

?We've got to think about giving out cookies," Gration told a Washington Post reporter in September 2009. "Kids, countries ? they react to gold stars, smiley faces, handshakes, agreements, talk, engagement."

Gration, who became ambassador 13 months ago, said in his statement Friday that the diplomatic assignment had been ?the perfect opportunity to use my deep-rooted knowledge of Kenya ? its people, its language, and its culture ? and my diplomatic, development, security, and humanitarian experience.?

Gration said he would deeply miss Kenya and its people.

?I am very proud of my 35-year career of dedicated and honorable service to our great nation, leading at all times with integrity first and the highest ethical standards,? he said.

Karen DeYoung in Washington contributed to this report.

Every Man a Historian Means Every Man: Speaking with the Fringe

The amazing power of the internet age is the pure democratizing ethic it has injected into our culture. We aren't simply pleased when the world around us solicits and listens to our opinions, we've come to expect it. Every news story has a comment thread; every article asks for our feedback. The White House solicits input from the American "user" and offers meaningful responses. In short, we are a people who are growing more vocal in our daily lives. The brilliant constitutional law professor and master of cultural Lawrence Lessig has called our culture "Read-Write" as opposed to "Read-Only."

What does this have to do with anything? This past weekend was the annual Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. One of the perks of being a faculty member is getting to sneak into the back for a few of the sessions. I snuck into Sunday's panel on Civil War Blogging, featuring A-list bloggers Kevin Levin (CWMemory.com), Brooks D. Simpson (Crossroads) and Keith Harris (Cosmic America). And one of the challenges which arose from the audience during the conversation was a desire for authority in blogs.

One commenter noted that he reads Crossroads because he has faith in Simpson as a historian, that he trusts Brooks' authority thanks to his published work. Another commenter asked if the Organization or American Historians or the CWI should publish a listing of "approved blogs."

Luckily, Brooks eviscerated the concept pretty handily by noting that the commenter was simply trying to impose a new authority on a medium essentially lacking in authority. And Brooks voiced the fear that if there were authoritative blogs, the world of the Civil War internet would simply devolve into a mirror of academia: historians writing for themselves and themselves alone. Brooks' comments were masterful, and will hopefully show up on C-SPAN sooner rather than later.

But the strongest conversation came when moderator Peter Carmichael the question of why we even listen to the fringe elements floating on the internet. Why should we even allow the voices of the "uninformed" enter the dialogue at all?

But here's the flaw in demanding authority be exercised on the democratic net: it's undemocratic. If every man is an historian, able to read the sources, find the data and come to his own conclusions, then we need to encourage every man to be an historian, not just the ones we think aren't whackjobs.

We do get to set the rules of the debate in our forums. On our blogs, that means we can ask commenters to be civil, and some of us go as far as to choose not to host comments we find counterproductive. In our parks and historic sites, that means we can ask folks to be civil, to listen to others' views respectfully and to investigate the historical sources honestly. But if we truly believe in the ethic of the internet, we can't simply allow only those who agree with us to speak.

In the end, democracy is about faith in the marketplace of ideas. I trust the intelligence of the American people. I think they can all be their own historians. Writing off a portion of the people is never going to help them to see the historical evidence, read it carefully and find true meaning in the past.

Writing them off, refusing to have real meaningful dialogue with them can only serve to alienate them.

The "every" in "every man a historian" really means "every." If you start from that point and move forward, the democracy of ideas truly means something.

(AP) ? Spain is just one victory away from making history with a third straight major tournament win.

Spain labored to a penalty shootout win over Portugal to reach Sunday's final, where only Germany or Italy can keep it from an unprecedented feat of World Cup and Euro competitions.

"Hopefully we can achieve what nobody else has achieved," coach Vicente del Bosque said. "This would be great for everyone: for Spanish football and for our country as a whole.

"These are signs of progress taking place in Spanish sports, and hopefully it will carry over into society as well."

The record run is on course even if Spain's attack hasn't exactly lived up to high expectations, with the team's ability to grind out results becoming its trademark in Poland and Ukraine.

Spain is the only team besides West Germany to reach three straight finals, and the team can go one better than that West German side from the 1970s with a victory in Kiev.

"Spain has already made history and now we continue making it," captain Iker Casillas said. "I hope people remember this all their lives because who would have thought we could achieve this four years ago."

The Spanish, who won the Euro 2008 and World Cup in 2010, remain on course after Cesc Fabregas netted the decisive penalty after Wednesday's game ended 0-0 after extra-time.

"I had an intuition. In the afternoon I was thinking about it, that I would have a unique opportunity and I told (assistant coach) Toni Grande that I didn't want to shoot second, that I wanted to shoot fifth," Fabregas said at the Donbass Arena. "I think I spoke to the ball, I know what I told the ball. I said 'I think we'll be together right to the final.'"

Del Bosque's team has an extra rest day over its opponent, something that will be appreciated as the Spanish coach admitted that he replaced Xavi Hernandez against Portugal because of fatigue.

And there are no preferences for the world champions in the final.

"In either case, whichever team gets out of the semifinal will be a great team," Del Bosque said.

Spain's biggest concern going into the final will be its starting attack after surprise choice Alvaro Negredo failed to gel with his teammates against Portugal. Fabregas or Fernando Torres are the favorites, with the pair having scored two goals each and each starting twice in five games.

Despite its inability to find the back of the net, Spain remains upbeat about its chances.

"Spain keeps making history, nobody has done what we have and now if we win Sunday's final we can add the exclamation point to this era," said defender Sergio Ramos, whose audacious soft chip in the penalty shootout helped put Spain in command. "I hope people appreciate how difficult it is to get to where we are. Spain won't always win every game, but we hope that's not the case on Sunday."

The 2012 Elections and Online Gaming | BingoSuite.com

In November Americans will go to the polls to select a new president. Both candidates have made their positions crystal clear on a number of issues and experts are predicting a very close race. President Obama inherited an economy that was in shambles and so far has not been able to bring back economic stability. For most Americans the economy is the most important issue and both candidates have focused their campaign efforts on the economy and how to improve it. There is one issue where the position of both candidates is not clear; online gambling.

Because of the economy and several wars online gambling has taken a back seat in the current presidential race. Neither candidate has voiced a clear position. In 2008 Obama was seen as more sympathetic to online gaming than Republican John McCain. Gamblers were disappointed in 2011 when the Justice department headed by Obama appointee Eric Holder seized the domains and assets of four online poker sites. A month later a popular online bingo site was seized. The actions caused one major online bingo network to withdraw from the US market.

If the economy continues to improve the elected president will face pressure from cash strapped states that want new revenue streams that legal online gambling will provide. Nelson Rose, a Whittier College law professor who specializes in gaming issues told the Huffington Post ?The president and Congress are going to be faced with proposals both to legalize every form of gambling and also outlaw all the gambling.? Over half of all states are currently passing pro online gambling legislation. Gambling critics say that the harm will outweigh the revenues provided by online gaming. Les Bernal, the executive director of the nonprofit Stop Predatory Gambling stated ?Anyone serious about getting America heading in the right direction has to get government out of the predatory gambling business.?

So far neither candidate has stated a clear position on internet gaming. When he was governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney supported the introduction of slot machines to help shrink a $3 billion dollar deficit. Romney later opposed the slots saying that the state was revitalized and no longer had to suffer from the harm done by gambling. Earlier in the year Romney told the Las Vegas Sun he would state his position on gambling before the Iowa Caucus. So far no statement has been forthcoming. Romney is also a Mormon and the Mormon Church is vehemently opposed to gambling.

Online bingo players remain frustrated by a lack of clarity from both candidates when it comes to online gaming. At this point it is hard to determine which candidate would best serve the interests of online bingo players and gamblers.

Finding The Right DC Dentist - Healthcare Systems - Author Article

Choose the right Washington, DC dentist, and your teeth and your pocketbook will thank you. Be an involved advocate in your dental health decisions. It?s simple to find the right DC dentist for you ? just follow the steps outlined below.

To find a great DC dentist, look for one who:

- Specializes in a certain niche if you have specific dental challenges. If you need extensive bridge work, for example, you won?t want to visit a pediatric dentist. Before making that first appointment, browse the dentist office?s web site and notice whether they put an emphasis on any certain procedure. For those who have pretty healthy teeth, it may be a good idea to visit a generalist who can do a bit of everything; however, if you have certain needs, you?ll want an expert in that area. IF you?re not sure whether or not the dentist is skilled at your certain requirement(s), ask for a short consultation before the actual appointment.

- Has extensive training ? Though it?s difficult to imagine any dentist in America being able to practice long before someone realizes they do not have the correct accreditation, that does not mean that all dentists are created equal. Take a look at that diploma on their wall. Did they attend a recognized dental school?

- Ask those who really know ? current patients. Many times, people choose their dentists based on the recommendations of people they know and trust. Ask your friends about their experiences with DC dentists. Grill them about the different criteria you deem to be important when choosing your dentist. When you receive a glowing review about a certain dental professional, give that person a chance. Browse their web site, learn more about them, and ask yourself whether or not you can see this person doing your dental work.

- Takes your insurance ? It?s an obvious plus that the DC dentist you choose to frequent accepts your insurance plan. Know what is covered by your policy to ensure there are no surprises when the bill arrives, and if you see a discrepancy, act quickly to remedy it. Don?t immediately blame the office, either ? insurance terms can be tricky.

- Continues to enroll in continuing education courses ? A dentist who sits on his/her laurels is not going to know about the latest and greatest techniques and procedures. Feel secure that your dentist is going to do the best job possible on your dental work. Ask if they keep up on technological advancements in dentistry; you may even want him or her to give you an example of a newer technique or piece of technology they use in their office.

- Has flexible scheduling ? Perhaps you work 9-5 and need early morning or lunchtime appointments. You may even find yourself able to leave work just thirty minutes early in order to arrive at a dental visit on time. Be honest with yourself regarding when you will be able to schedule your dental appointments, and ask dental staff how flexible they are with scheduling. Some dental offices even open at 7am to ensure that they are able to meet their patients? needs.

My top 7 ?advanced? tips for effective cold calling ? Indianapolis ...

Here are my top 7 ?advanced? tips for effective cold calling.

1. What is the Goal of Your Call? Is it to get an appointment? Get in to see the boss immediately? Or is it to make a sale on your first call? First know exactly you want the outcome to be from the call. Given today?s business environment, I would suggest focusing on creating an interest and getting an appointment to come back to present your wares another time. At the very least, leave with the decision makers business card in hand so you can do a follow-up call or email campaign.

2. Know Your Pitch. If you want to achieve the intended goal of your call, have your ask pre-scripted and practiced before you go in. Your initial ask should include who you are, your benefit statement, and an ask for the decision maker. Once the decision maker is there, your pitch should include their name, your name and company, your benefit statement, and an ask for an appointment by suggesting two specific times.

3. Where Are You Going? If you don?t have the luxury of simply walking the halls of a massive office building to cold call, and have geographically dispersed prospects, create a route on Google that takes you to each location in the most efficient manner. Your time is gold. Don?t waste it on the road. (PS ? To MAXIMIZE your windshield time, make prospect calls on the phone while you drive between cold calls)

4. Bring Choch. Okay? The first three tips were pretty basic, and this one sounds cheesy, but stay with me. If you focus on executing these behaviors, you will WIN at cold call prospecting. Now, back to tip number 4 ? Bring a goodie for the gate-keeper (receptionist). Chocolate and manicures typically work very well. Present it with a big smile and they will love you forever. Why else do you think drug reps bring food to doctors offices? It?s not for the doctors?

5. Do Some Strategic Calling. I cold called my office building a couple of years ago, and instead of asking for meetings to show my product, I asked for meetings to discover how I could trade potential business prospects with my prospect. You?ll get an overwhelmingly warm response, a higher rate of appointments set, and probably some deals out of it to. During my strategic calling, I met Scott Cunningham, who ended up referring me some business, becoming part of my referral team, and also a client. Boom.

6. Circle Call. I don?t schedule time to cold call. I simply schedule appointments to sell my product, and then plan 15-30 minutes before or after an appointment to visit the surrounding businesses. Asking the client you are in an appointment with for referrals around their office location can also support this activity.

7. Do It and Mix It Up. Driving to an office complex, having lunch, taking a 1/2-hour nap, and then making 3 calls is not a day of hard cold calling. Make a plan and visit 10-15 offices in a day. Depending on how close they are, you should be able to make at LEAST 2 calls per hour with qualified companies. Don?t rely on cold calling alone. This strategy is simply one of many that should be employed in a robust business development strategy.

What are some other strategies that you have used to make your cold calls more effective?

Ecuador studying asylum bid by WikiLeaks founder

(AP) ? Ecuador's foreign minister says lawyers convened by the government are studying the political and legal implications of granting exile to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Minister Ricardo Patino did not indicate when a decision might come. Ecuador's ambassador to Britain returned to Quito over the weekend and discussed the case Monday with Patino and President Rafael Correa.

Assange took refuge in Ecuador's London Embassy last Tuesday in a last-ditch attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning in the alleged sexual assault of two women.

Assange claims he's being persecuted politically.

The site he runs published tens of thousands of leaked, sensitive U.S. documents before his legal troubles began in late 2010. Assange says he fears the United States will seek his extradition from Sweden.

Best Fast-Food Business To Start Now | Small Business Opportunities

$60 million for community-minded fun and fresh food biz.

Wahoo?s Fish Taco has been a community mainstay and worldwide pop culture phenomenon since 1988. Celebrated for its fresh food, pro-athlete support from the surf, skate and snow industries, sticker-covered walls and charity involvement, Wahoo?s continues to expand and is breaking ground in states that have yet to experience its eclectic Mexican-Brazilian-Asian menu.?To date, there are more than 60 restaurant locations across the nation, with additional locations opening in the next several months and plans for international expansion in the near future. Sales for the company hit $60 million in 2011.

The latest restaurant to open is the New York City Park Avenue location, which had its grand opening on Feb. 20. With much anticipation as the first East Coast location, the launch was well received with die-hard and new fans introduced to the phenomenon that is Wahoo?s Fish Taco. Due to the incredible demand, there are already plans to open seven more stores in the New York City area. Wahoo?s is also in the process of opening a Tokyo, Japan restaurant location ? with the possibility of other countries as well.

In an effort to meet the demand, Wahoo?s launched a growth initiative in 2009 to add at least 100 franchise locations in the next five years. Within the last two years, Wahoo?s has about one-third of the 100 franchise locations secured. Current expansion into different demographic marketplaces is changing how Wahoo?s has traditionally been recognized as a restaurant designed for beach towns and recreational resorts.

Wahoo?s Fish Taco built its name, brand awareness and customer loyalty on its enthusiasm for extreme sports and is known for its specialty charbroiled fish, steak and chicken tacos and immense in flavor and size burritos. The restaurant?s eclectic surf, skate-themed atmosphere and fusion-styled menu with a Hawaiian North Shore vibe have made Wahoo?s the popular choice for Southern Californians.

Wahoo?s Fish Taco was founded in 1988 by three brothers, Wing, Ed and Mingo, who together combined their love of surf and food to create a restaurant with an eclectic Mexican/Brazilian/Asian menu and a Hawaiian North Shore vibe. The first location opened in Costa Mesa, California.

Wing, Ed and Mingo grew up in San Paolo, Brazil, where they spent their adolescent years above their parents? Chinese restaurant. Each day after school, the brothers worked in the restaurant peeling shrimp or washing dishes. In 1975, the family moved to Orange County, California, where their dad opened the famous Shanghai Pine Garden Chinese restaurant on Balboa Island, frequented by locals and celebrities alike.

The brothers grew up in the restaurant and on the beaches. Addicted to surfing, they would travel south to Mexico to surf, and it was in Mexico that they were first introduced to what would become their signature menu item: the fish taco. Years of surfing trips created a craving for the specialty of charbroiled fish, salsa and tortillas.

In 1988, when the brothers decided to import the fish taco to Southern California, they gave it a unique twist. They combined the fish taco with their Brazilian favorites and Asian-inspired items. The original restaurant was decorated with donations of local surf companies, further fueling the development of a loyal and steady following of locals. Some customers began visiting daily, and servers gained a familiarity with their orders, lending to the friendly atmosphere.

In 1990, Steve Karfaridis joined as a partner and served as a catalyst for expansion into Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach.

The three brothers, Mingo Lee, Eduardo Lee and Wing Lam built their business brand, name and customer loyalty based on their love of extreme sports. The restaurant?s mix of surf and skate-themed decor reflects this and the trio serves up a fusion-styled menu with a Hawaiian North Shore vibe.

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT WAHOO?S FISH TACO BIZ

Since opening their doors, the original Wahoo?s Fish Taco has never changed. All food including the salsa, fish, meat, and rice are prepared fresh each day onsite. The Banzai Burrito was created after several customers requested the famous Banzai Bowl wrapped up in a tortilla. To this day, the Wahoo?s menu continues to be reinvented with the help of customer and employee recommendations.

Wahoo?s first catering job was for Billabong?s National Sales Meeting in 1988. The now famous sticker-lined walls started at the Costa Mesa 1 location, when competing surf companies posted banners to stake their claim on tables in the restaurant.

Each year, Wahoo?s Fish Tacos works with several hundred local charities.

Over the past two decades, the company has partnered with more than 100 professional athletes including Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater and Ryan Sheckler.

Orioles rally to beat Nationals 2-1

BALTIMORE (AP) ? A tense interleague series between two neighboring teams with exceptional pitching staffs was decided by a timely swing from a player who almost got the day off.

Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to interrupt Baltimore's agonizing offensive struggle, and the Orioles squeezed past the Washington Nationals 2-1 Sunday.

Baltimore appeared headed for its third shutout loss in six games before Adam Jones led off the eighth with a single off Sean Burnett (0-1) and Wieters drove an 0-1 pitch over the center-field wall.

"It felt great," Wieters said. "Everyone was battling up there, trying to grind through at-bats to get a run, and to finally get one was great."

After Wieters gave Baltimore the lead, he sealed the victory in the ninth. With one out, Jim Johnson struck out Danny Espinosa and Wieters threw out Ian Desmond attempting to steal second base.

"Any out you can get, especially the 27th out, is huge," Wieters said.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter considered resting his workhorse catcher, who also played Saturday night, then decided against it.

"I came close to not playing Matt, with an off-day (Monday)," Showalter said.

Prior to the home run, the Orioles wasted several scoring opportunities and stranded eight runners over seven innings. Baltimore scored only five runs in the series and went 1 for 16 with runners in scoring position, yet still managed to win two of three.

"You win games with pitching," Wieters said. "And then it takes one big swing, or a couple of guys to get on and find some holes, and then you're right back in the lead."

The way the Orioles were hitting, it seemed unlikely they would mount a sustained attack against the Nationals. Fortunately, Wieters gave Baltimore everything it needed for another interleague victory.

"Clutch," teammate J.J, Hardy said. "I mean, to win a ballgame like that the way we've been swinging was something we needed. It just didn't seem like we were going to piece together a bunch of hits."

The Orioles finished 11-7 in interleague play and won five of six series.

Pedro Strop (4-2) got the final out in the eighth for Baltimore and Johnson worked the ninth for his 22nd save.

Ryan Zimmerman had the lone RBI for the Nationals, who scored five runs in the series. Washington was 34-2 when leading after seven innings.

The Nationals looked every bit like the team with the best ERA in the majors ? except for that one pitch to Wieters.

"He just got a fastball over the heart of the plate," Washington manager Davey Johnson said.

"I tried to go with my strength and left the ball out over the plate," Burnett said. "He's a good hitter and made me pay for it."

Wieters' hit turned the series in Baltimore's favor. The Orioles won the opener 2-1, then lost 3-1 before taking the finale.

"We play a lot of close games, and our bullpen expects to get the job done in those situations," Burnett said. "Today I let one slip away."

Making his first start for the Nationals since May 25, Ross Detwiler allowed four hits and walked two in five innings. In his previous start against Baltimore on May 19, the left-hander gave up six runs. But that was at a point in the season when the Orioles scored 32 runs over a six-game span.

Jake Arrieta gave up one run and five hits in six innings, and it still took an unlikely comeback by the Orioles for him to avoid becoming the first 10-game loser in the big leagues this season.

Zimmerman snapped a 5-for-49 slump and gave Washington a 1-0 third-inning lead with a two-out single that scored Jhonatan Solano. Zimmerman, who had a cortisone shot in his ailing right shoulder before the game, went 2 for 4.

Detwiler retired his first seven batters and was cruising until the fourth, when Baltimore loaded the bases with two outs. Ronny Paulino hit a harmless fly ball to end the threat.

In the Orioles fifth, two singles and a groundout put runners on second and third with two outs for Jones, who hit a fly ball to deep left.

Bryce Harper led off the Washington sixth by turning a bouncer up the middle into a dash-for-second double, but Arrieta worked out of trouble by getting Desmond to hit a two-out popup.

Baltimore's frustration continued in the seventh, when Hardy grounded out with runners on second and third and two outs.

NOTES: On Monday night in Colorado, Washington RHP Stephen Strasburg vies to become the first player in Nationals history to win seven consecutive starts. ... The Orioles open a two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. LHP Dana Eveland likely will begin paternity leave on that day, and it's possible that RHP Matt Lindstrom (finger) will be activated from the disabled list to fill out the Baltimore roster. ... Nationals closer Drew Storen, who had elbow surgery in April, hopes to make his season debut next weekend in Atlanta. ... Held out of the starting lineup in part because of an 0-for-28 slump, Baltimore's Chris Davis flied out as a pinch hitter. ... The Orioles have gone 17 straight games without a stolen base, their longest such streak since a 20-game run in June 1962.

"Zucking Up" Information Security | Business Computing World

Any parent of a teenager should read ?Facebook threatens to ?Zuck up? the human race,? a recent article by entrepreneur-turned-author, Andrew Keen. In his harsh critique of the age of social media, he argues that ?[by] sabotaging what it really means to be human, Facebook is stealing the innocence of our inner lives? [Most] of all, Facebook is destroying our privacy as discrete individuals.? Ah-ha! I exclaimed to myself. I?m not the only Luddite! I?m not the only one worried about this.

But Keen just touches the tip of the iceberg as far as I am concerned. As the CEO of an information risk management software company, my concern goes much further ? what will this oversharing mean to those who are trying to protect our energy infrastructure? Our financial system? Our credit worthiness?

He brushes against this by referencing a study by Jon Miller, the Director of the University of Michigan?s Institute for Social Research, and Aisha Sultan, a Fellow at the University of Michigan on ?Facebook Parenting? in which they report the findings of a decades-long survey of 4,000 middle school children turned adults. Their conclusion: ?We?ve created a sense of normality about a world where what?s private is public. The sense of being entitled to privacy has been devalued.?

When you most recently signed up for an on-line service, what sort of information did they ask from you to enable you to reset your password if you forgot it? We have gone beyond Mother?s Maiden Name, haven?t we? But let me ask you? isn?t it information that might be shared somewhere on the Internet? Your first pet?s name? The make and model of your first car? Your father?s home town? Your high school mascot?

It is not too hard to see this information being on your Facebook page, or the page of those who are your ?friends.? And it?s not just an issue of you posting that you are going on a wonderful vacation or are about to visit your child in college ? giving local burglars a tipoff.

We continue to hear from the FBI and others that organized crime and terrorists have been doing long range planning, and are gathering information that may be used decades from now. Information like your pet?s name, your father?s home town, and your high school mascot will be useful in the future. As Miller and Sultan state, ?there is no delete key for the Internet.?

We cannot expect Facebook or any other social media service to protect our privacy. That is our responsibility. Will there come to pass some miracle, ubiquitous technology to smooth our use of the multiple internet-based services we use, and at the same time strengthen the security of our personal information? Perhaps.

But so long as we are as careless with our private information as we are today, we are the ones responsible for ?Zucking up? our own privacy, and eventually the security of the systems on which we base our economic identity.

Samsung Galaxy S III is hot: bursts into flames and melts through its own casing

Samsung Galaxy S III is hot hot enough to melt through its casing

It doesn't look good. This Galaxy S III apparently malfunctioned while in an in-car holster, causing some substantial melting and burn marks across the lower half of the device. The global HSPA+ iteration of Samsung's new flagship apparently sparked into white flames, followed by a bang. While it's certainly not the first smartphone to implode in transit, the damage -- along the base but separate to the charging port -- looks pretty substantial and although the screen still apparently worked, reception was dead. The phone has been whisked off to a repair center through phone retailer Carphone Warehouse for the full autopsy. User dillo2k10 was left unscathed, but it's apparently left some nasty molten plastic remains on the inside of his car. Hit up the gallery link below for some more scorch-marked close-ups.
