Georgian opposition supporters flood capital

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? Tens of thousands of opposition supporters are thronging the center of Georgia's capital in a show of strength days ahead of a parliamentary election.

An opposition coalition headed by a billionaire businessman is presenting the government of Mikhail Saakashvili with its toughest challenge since he became president nearly nine years ago.

The capital, Tbilisi, long ago turned against Saakashvili, with many people disturbed by what they describe as his authoritarian rule.

Monday's election is being seen as a test of Saakashvili's commitment to democracy as he tries to move the former Soviet republic toward closer integration with the European Union and NATO.

On Saturday, people of all ages converged on the center from four directions on streets closed to traffic for a giant campaign rally on Freedom Square.

Al-Qaida group withdraws from its last Somali bastion

Stringer / AFP - Getty Images

The al-Qaida-allied al-Shebab militant group said it had left the city of Kismayo, seen above Friday, after it was attacked by a Kenya-Somalia force.

By NBC News wire serives

MOGADISHU, Somalia --?Somalia's al-Shabab rebels withdrew from the southern Somali city of Kismayo overnight, the rebel group and residents said Saturday, a day after Kenyan and Somali government forces attacked the militants' last bastion.

?We moved out our fighters ... from Kismayo at midnight,'' al-Shabab spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, told Reuters.

He threatened to strike back soon. ?The enemies have not yet entered the town. Let them enter ?Kismayo which will soon turn into a battlefield,? he said.

African Union troops from Kenya, Uganda and Burundi have combined over the last 18 months to kick al-Shabab out of the Somali capital Mogadishu and take a series of smaller towns that the insurgents fled to.

Al-Shabab, which formally merged with al-Qaida in February, had earned money by collecting taxes on goods arriving at the Indian Ocean port, so the loss of the stronghold is a double blow to the armed fundamentalist group that began attacks in 2007 and went on to control all but a few blocks of the capital.

D-Day for al-Qaida in Somalia? Troops storm beaches at last stronghold

The assault is likely to send al-Shabab fighters underground. Hardcore fighters may unleash suicide bombs and ambushes but less dedicated fighters could melt back into their communities, further reducing al-Shabab's strength.

At an international one-day summit Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron said the world would "pay a price" if it fails to help Somalia overcome terrorism, piracy and starvation. ITV's Lee Comley reports.?

Born in the USA, but now among Somalia's Islamist terrorists

The African Union force said that some al-Shabab fighters have already contacted military officials in recent days, saying they wanted to defect from al-Shabab.

Expert: War on terror at 'critical' point as al-Qaida looks to regroup in Africa

Speaking on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York Friday, Kenya's Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi called the entry of Kenyan forces into the Somali port "a significant victory."

"This is a major blow to them and we think it's positive for the region and for Somalia," he said.?

Acupuncture May Assist You to Shed Extra ... - Remedies for health

Everyone has heard a lot about acupuncture procedure and its benefits. An acupuncturist put needles into some spots on your body thanks to it you can calm down, forget about your concerns and worries and dream of some pleasant stuff. But I would like to notice acupuncture is more than just relaxing medical procedure. It turned out the alternative medicine technique. can effectively fight your extra weight.
Many people all over the world experience this approach and are satisfied with the result. Acupuncture is practiced for 5000 years and it is much older than other alternative medicine therapies and techniques.
If you are fed up with diets and other methods of losing weight I consider it is time to look inside and define the actual reason of your obesity with acupuncture. A specialist won?t put right now needles on special spots. First of all, he will try to disclose the issues of your excess weight. There are a bunch of causes why people get extra weight. Overeating, lack of physical activities, hormonal changes, slow metabolism process and poor diet are culprits of getting obese.
The rational approach of using acupuncture is established to control weight, enhance the work of your stomach, boost the metabolism process, get out from the liver all chemicals and toxins for better digestion and monitor obesity-related hormones. Acupuncture can regulate your brain and hormones that are responsible for body temperature, thirst, hunger and etc. It maintains the energy flow to your brain and handles your fat keeping and metabolism. The procedure has such a feature to make sure people that they are full as it strengthens the smooth muscle of the stomach.
Acupuncture helps to output endorphins that take charge of controlling appetite. After an acupuncturist determinates the cause of gain weight problem he will put needles on some bodily spots. Some landmarks on it have responsibility for a special function of your body. Some of them will stimulate your parts of the body to reduce a natural addiction to food. I convince you this procedure is not harmless and doesn?t induce any addiction. It is a natural and weight loss stimulating approach.
To get prolific results it is recommended to do this therapy several times as weight loss is a permanent process and will take some time to succeed. If you decide to take up acupuncture you have to eat a well-balanced diet, get enough physical exercises and avoid stress. It just increases the process of reducing extra pounds.
Some tips how to use acupuncture:
1. Make a research to find a good acupuncturist. The specialist must have a license for this routine and have a special education and enough experience. Firstly, they have to be medical doctors and other professional staff that know about basis of this medical practice.
2. To get more result it is better to select a full course of acupuncture. Your specialist will set up a daily plan for you and you have to stick to it. It will take some time to achieve the main goal. Usually it is necessary to get 10 courses of acupuncture for more effective treatment. The daily plan also includes easting healthy food and doing regular exercises.
3. Don?t be afraid of acupuncture. It is actually a relaxing and natural way of treatment. Some methods of acupuncture contain ear stapling that is also kind of new and forcible treatment for weight loss.
I guess it is worth to try acupuncture as for some sessions you will feel definite relief and calm. I have experienced it 2 times and it lived up to my expectations. I guess it is quite better to try it in conjunction with nutritious diet and exercises.

Rio Rancho mayor takes heat for church speech

The New Mexico American Civil Liberties Union is criticizing the Mayor of Rio Rancho for holding a speech at a local church.

Mayor Tom Swisstack held his annual ?State of the City? Friday afternoon at the Destiny Center Church, a Christian-based house of worship.

"What it suggests to the public is that the city endorses that particular religious perspective and we don't think governments should be putting themselves in a position where it selects one religion or one denomination over another," said Peter Simsonson, Executive Director of the New Mexico Chapter of the ACLU.

Swisstack said he personally did not pick the venue for the speech. The event?s organizer, the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce chose the church, according to Swisstack

?It?s a non-denominational venue and has the acoustics, visuals, and the seating arrangements that are conducive to making this presentation," Swisstack said.

The ACLU argued a speech as important as the "State of the City" should be at a secular building such as a city facility, a high school gym, or even the Santa Ana Star Center.

"In principal, it certainly suggests government is endorsing a particular religious viewpoint and that is strictly forbidden by our Constitution and for good reason," Simonson said.

Another point of contention is that the speech was a paid event. Non-members of the Chamber of Commerce were required to pay $45 to see the mayor deliver the speech.

Swisstack said his speech will be available online at the city?s public website and will be played on the city?s public access channel.

Her pregnancy is sure to be a dream for the actress, who told Us in June 2011 that she and Zincone "absolutely" wanted children sooner rather than later. The couple is also good at keeping the romance alive -- no matter where they are. "We've had some really great experiences. When I was shooting [2009's 'Couples Retreat'] in Bora Bora, he came out there and it was like a honeymoon that we never had," gushed the mom-to-be, who vows to never spend more than 2-3 weeks away from her man. "We get really lucky and we make it work."

Australians richer after statistician 'finds' $338 billion

By Reuters

SYDNEY - Australians are suddenly a whole lot better off after the government statistician "found" A$325 billion ($338 billion) in share assets previously unrecognized.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday released its latest report on household assets which included massive upward revisions to estimates for equity holdings. Total financial assets were now put at A$3.1 trillion at the end of March, compared to the originally reported A$2.77 trillion.

The revision is worth roughly A$14,380 for every one of the country's 22.6 million people.

The world's 10 most expensive cities

"This issue incorporates new estimates for households holding of unlisted shares and other equity in other private non financial corporations," the statistician drily noted.

The value of such equity is now put at A$383 billion at the end of March, compared to the original A$91 billion.

"The Bureau of Statistics has effectively 'found' A$325 billion in household wealth," said Craig James, chief economist at CommSec.

The poorest countries in the world

Total financial assets also rose further in the second quarter to stand at A$3.11 trillion by the end of June, up A$76 billion on the same period last year.

The upward revisions to wealth also mean households do not look quite as stretched when compared to their debts.

The ABS now estimates the ratio of debt to liquid assets was 129.1 percent in March, well down on the original estimate of 170.1 percent.

There have been long-standing concerns that the high debt levels of Australian households left them vulnerable to an economic shock such as a sharp rise in the, currently low, 5.1 percent unemployment rate.

Catch Notes (for iPhone)

Writers like me take notes all day long. We jot things down during meetings, while walking the dog, and sometimes even in the middle of a sentence, any time an idea strikes. And so do students, office workers, and many others, leaving us all in need of a great app that put tools at our fingertips for capturing an idea before it disappears into the ether. Poof.

Catch Notes for iPhone, which has come a long way since it first appeared in the Apple App Store, comes close to being one such all-purpose note-taking tool, but still needs a little fine tuning. The app excels at supporting collaboration, and also has unique features. Plus, it uses the full, longer screen size of the iPhone 5. A few problems, such as buggy audio memos and the inability to customize the colors of folders (or "spaces" as they're called in Catch) to your liking should be fixed. The color issue in particular is a shame because color can do wonders for your data.

Evernote, which to be fair looks drab when side-by-side with Catch, remains my go-to note-syncing app and PCMag's Editors' Choice on the iPhone, because it works well, has all the core functionality you'll need, and integrates with a huge variety of other services, which is key. Catch has better and more interesting collaboration features, though.

Set Up and Sign In
The Catch iPhone app is a very simple to set up. After downloading the free app and launching it, new users have three choices for registering an account: 1) sign into your Catch account or set one up with an email address and password, 2) log in using your Google ID, or 3) log in using your Facebook account.

Catch starts you off with a sample note that contains information about how to create notes, organize them, and sync them. It's also nice to see this dummy note appear where one would otherwise face a dauntingly blank canvas.

Catch Notes' Design and Features
If you've used Catch's iPad app, the look of the iPhone version will immediately strike you. Design remains crucial, in my opinion, because if you intend to use an app a lot, you have to like what you see. Catch for iPhone uses color and dynamic menus to not only provide utility, but also lure you to want to play with the app. To start a new note, you press a plus sign in the bottom center of the screen, which pops open a radial menu with options for adding a reminder, image, typed note, audio note, or checklist item.

I like Catch's checklists better than Evernote's because Catch lets you have a checklist item as a note type, whereas you can only add checklists inside an Evernote note using paragraph formatting. In Catch for iPhone, your to-do tasks appear right on screen when you're looking at your list of notes. In Evernote, you have to open a note to see your to-do tasks.

In testing, the audio memo feature was very buggy. I was able to record just fine. A microphone appeared on screen, and it seemed to record my voice, as it responded to changes in my voice's volume. But when I saved and closed the audio memo, it would not playback. The following day, I finally had some success, but I don't know why it didn't work initially (and repeatedly). I was testing on a new iPhone 5, running iOS 6, with a strong Wi-Fi connection.

Catch for iPhone formerly did not have folders, relying only on tags for sorting, but it does now. Folders, also known as "spaces," let you group your notes much more effectively than tags alone. Each space has a name or title and a color, but you can't customize the colors, unfortunately. Whatever color Catch assigns, that's the one you get. I use color in all segments of my life to stay organized, and I really hate not being able to control which folders are assigned which colors.

One additional feature is the ability to add geo-location information to your note, a great feature for frequent travelers who need to be able to look up notes based on where a meeting or business took place.

Price
Just like Evernote, Catch apps are free, as is an account, but users can pay $4.99 per month or $44.99 per year to upgrade to a Pro account for a few extra perks. This costs the same as an Evernote Premium account ($45 per year).

A free Catch account gives you five spaces for private or shared notebooks (or "spaces") and the ability to add 70MB per month of new content. A Pro account lets you have 50 spaces, 1GB of new content uploaded per month, and the ability to attach office documents to your notes.

Unique Features: Tagging and Collaboration
Catch uses a unique tagging system for your notes. You create tags by typing a hashtag (#) before any word right in your note. The words then look as if they are hyperlinks, indicating that they're now tags. I can see how some users will find this concept simple because you never have to add tags as a secondary step. Tags are always at your fingertips while you're writing notes. The problem is you can't easily reference which tags you've used in the past. My problem is that this system allows for inconsistencies that don't occur when you can select tags from a pre-made list. For example, in Catch, I might write into one note the tag "#iPadApps" and in other places use the more general "#MobileApp" or "#MobileApps." As a highly organized person, seeing inconsistently written tags like these would drive me batty.

If you like Catch's unique tagging system, you'll probably also like its search box, which lets you look for hashtags on notes, or filter notes by other criteria, like favorite notes marked with a star or those that you've shared with collaborators.

Catch's collaborative take on notes really isn't like any other note-taking system I've seen, and in a good way. Basic collaboration takes the form of emailing notes to others, and that's nothing new. Every note in Catch has a comments thread at the bottom. I like that the user as well as the collaborators can discuss a note's content without anyone messing up the contents of the note itself. Imagine it in action in a business setting. Perhaps you're taking notes while traveling with colleagues or while at a conference. One person can make a note quickly while in a conference session and post it to her colleagues, and others read it, ask follow up questions, or simply add her two cents, all in the comments. Comments always stay with the note, too, so everything syncs to all your devices.

Catch All or Catch None?
The Catch iPhone app is a good choice for note-takers who need collaboration features, although the app still needs some fine tuning. If you're a stickler for consistency, as I am, you might find the hashtag-as-tagging feature not to your taste. The inability to choose your own colors for folder or "spaces" also kind of baffles me.

Evernote may not be as pretty, but it's more reliable and integrates with a huge array of other services, making it PCMag's Editors' Choice for iPhone note-taking apps. If your notes tend to be more along the lines of to-do lists, try one of my favorite apps, Awesome Note (+ToDo) ($3.99), which doesn't have its own syncing features but can integrate with Evernote if you need syncing.

The content of NPP Press Conference had no basis - Ms Tetteh ...

Ms Hanna S. Tetteh, Communications Director of President John Dramani Mahama 2012 Campaign team on Wednesday said the team has noted with regret the content of a press conference addressed by a Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A statement signed by Ms Tetteh said: ?We are of the view that it is important to raise the level of political discourse to a higher level of decency and debate to focus on the issues of most concern to Ghanaians and not flimsy, baseless personal attacks.?

?We note with regret that our opponents in the NPP are obviously not capable of conducting their campaign within that frame. This is unfortunate, but no doubt would give the people of Ghana an indication of the pathetic and desperate nature of their campaign for election 2012.?

The statement said the content of the NPP press conference was not worth public time, adding, ?As it brings home no issues worthy of consideration by the good people of Ghana.?

It said it was simply, an attempt to malign President Mahama, and asked ?if President Mahama was the one who gave STX the 264 million United States dollars, terminated the contracts between the Government of Ghana and CP, Rockshell and Alfred Woyome, all No.?

The statement said beyond throwing allegations of corruption at appointees of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Government, and asked whether the text of their press conference had any substance. No.

It said: ?The respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies will respond in detail to all the allegations of corruption involving projects of those Ministries, and the people of Ghana will be reminded of the details of each transaction and the process it went through.?

The statement said: ?We will also remind Ghanaians of transactions that were concluded during the NPP administration, and properties that were acquired by NPP functionaries, or sold by the NPP Government to their business cronies so that voters are reminded of the facts surrounding the transactions the previous administration was involved with.?

It said the NDC Government under the Late President John Atta Mills, and now President Mahama has focused on bringing development across the country.

The statement said the people of Ghana heard the affirmations in the tributes that were paid to the late President Mills and that these had reflected in the public endorsement of President Mahama as he has travelled the length and breadth of Ghana.

It said: ?This is what the NPP would like the people of Ghana to forget hence the vicious personal attack on President Mahama.?

The statement said: ?Unlike the speech writers of the NPP we believe the people of Ghana are more discerning, and now that they have made the debate on character central to their campaign.?

?We believe that the people of Ghana will make the assessment of the character of the contenders for the Presidency, and choose the better man to advance the agenda of creating a peaceful, prosperous country where every citizen irrespective of where they come from or their religious and political affiliation will have the opportunity to succeed.?

It said the President Mahama campaign team have taken note of the fact that the NPP and Nana Akuffo Addo have proceeded to launch a viral attack on facebook and other social media platforms in the vain hope that once allegations and slander are planted online they will at some point be repeated in the print and electronic media as news.

The statement said: ?Desperate people try desperate tactics, and as the good book says, ?by their fruits you shall know them?.?

It said: ?President Mahama assures the people of Ghana that he will continue to work in their best interest.?

The statement said the NDC campaign for the 2012 elections will continue to focus on the most important social, economic and governance issues affecting Ghana.

It said the campaign will explain to Ghanaians the areas on which President Mahama and his Government will focus their attention if given the mandate of the people of this country, ?in order to work for you and continue to advance the Better Ghana Agenda.? GNA

Interview: Maja Rohwetter's ludic landscapes - GAMESCENES

GameScenes?is conducting a series of interviews with artists, critics, curators, and gallerists operating in the field of Game Art, as part of an ongoing investigation of the social history of this fascinating art world. Our goal is to illustrate the genesis and evolution of a phenomenon that changed the way game-based art is being created, experienced, and discussed today. Maja Rohwetter is a German artist whose work focuses on spaces and landscapes. Her environments are a curious mix of virtual?and tangible worlds. The influence of videogames is manifest in her aesthetic sensibility, palette, and shapes. Even the titles of her paintings, e.g. Vice City, evoke the ludic. As she writes in her statement,?

"I collect the material for my paintings on photographic trips through real urban and suburban space, as well as on screenshot-trips through computer games. In the digital sektches, I combine cutouts from different games and photos of construction sites. These areas are submitted to a steady process of reorganization, intended forms existst next to temporary forms as well as forms from the past." (source)

Rohwetter?is current featured in the group exhibition ?Hj?rta spel? at?Datamuseet in Link?ping, Sweden. Rohwetter has also a special relation to Sweden, a relation that can be seen, for instance, in her series Stockholm.?

Maja Rohwetter,?thinking particle, oil/canvas, 165 x 100 cm, 20118

GameScenes: The series ?Space Oddity? and ?NURBS? are paintings of virtual?landscapes. How did you create these works? Did you first?develop your landscapes with help of a computer program and then transfer them onto the?canvas?

Maja Rohwetter:?All paintings refer to a 3D model that I built reconstructing a painting from 2005 ("ger?st")?that was based on screenshots from computer games mixed with digital photos of urban

environments. I originally did the 3D model for my first interactive gaming environment?("proceed"), where you can navigate through a painted virtual world. The production of?this animation unexpectedly gave me a lot of input concerning fundamental painterly?questions, for instance the relation between object and texture, that I (with help of lots of?screenshots) continued to explore in the NURBS paintings. Since then, I have developed an ongoing dialogue of painting, gaming footage, photography and 3D modelling.

For the "Space Oddity" series, I develop my ideas mostly in collages of renderings from?digital material with real physical material (paint), that I translate into painting and/or?rebuild the picture or parts of it in 3D, sometimes I build physical objects based on paintings?that I rebuild in 3D. The visual material is going through a permanent media transfer. Every?medium brings its own principles, sometimes they get into conflict with each other. On?these crossing points, there is an enormous potential for new image concepts and research in?aesthetic conventions.?

So it's not really about "transferring" virtual landscapes to the canvas, also transferring?painted elements from the canvas to 3D. I use the collages merely as a starting point, with a?lot of parts that I have no idea about how to paint that. When painting, things often turn out?quite different from what I expected, so the painting process has its own decisions, sometimes?leaving alone the digital printout, sometimes making it necessary to return to 3D. So, the?elements shown on my current paintings are relicts of the painting from 2007 that the first?animation started from. That's why - even if they look quite abstract- they still have a notion?of landscape.

image from www.majarohwetter.de

Maja Rohwetter,?strand, oil/canvas, 150 x 220 cm, 2007

GameScenes: The aesthetics of videogames and virtual worlds are a leit-motif in your works. Is the screen your main inspiration? Is the canvas the analog equivalent of a gamescape?

Maja Rohwetter:?I experience computer gaming mostly as a spectator or observer: my partner and now also my?son play a lot and I often sit and watch. I relate to the visual appearance and inner structure of?games rather than to their narrative content. Confronted with the every day gaming practice ?of my partner, I was really fascinated by the look of the environments. I started to prow in?games to go back to the interesting sites I had seen. Since I was really bad in navigating, I?almost by chance got into the fringes and outskirts of the virtual worlds: I got fascinated by?the parallelity of perfection and unwillingly revealed construction in gaming environments.?

I found out that computer games deal quite a lot with reality constructions, to query them?corresponds to my general mindset. So, in 2005, I started to undertake foto-safaris in games?purposeful provoking bugs in the realtime rendering (which still was easy at that time), that?I documented and used as source material. At the moment, I mostly use my own 3D material?from the animations "proceed" and "something somewhere".

GameScenes: Landscape painting has a long tradition in the history of art. Is your practice a rumination on this theme? Are you "upgrading" landscape painting for the age of digital media??

Maja Rohwetter:?I'm working with two apparently opposite visual cultures, the handmade painterly slow?traditional "high culture" and the accelerated technical ?trivial culture? of gaming. I focus on?the different concept of landscape or space in art history and computer games, not so much on?the "look", the gaming environments look often quite traditional.

Since the invention of central perspective construction in the renaissance, the world in?paintings is geared to the spectator/painter. So an individualistic world order is established.?This order is static and manageable. I'm especially fascinated by those painters who pick out?the reality construction as their central theme, as Paolo Uccello.?At first glance, this seems similar in an "ego-shooter" perspective in computer games. But?computer games are bead on a totally different spatial concept: The real time rendering?implies that the world is always calculated for the current viewpoint of the user. Things?you don?t look at, are no longer represented to save data amount. Going to places that are?not intended for that, or moving towards objects from inconvenient perspectives, quickly?changing your position, things disappear, seemingly three-dimensional objects turnout as flat?and vice versa.

Navigation is an act of structuring the world for the moment, moving through it means a?permanent process of constructing and deconstructing it. Like painters during art history?related to real landscape environments in the "Newton world", I relate the fringes, outskirts?and transitive spaces of 3D environments, that I use as field for visual and conceptual?experiments.?Since German romanticism, landscape does not only describe an outer reality, but can be?seen as a counterpart to an inner condition. A feeling of longing, where the human being is?somehow separated from the landscape or not "congruent" with the outer world, as in the?paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, is certainly an underlying theme of my paintings.

I see landscape as spatial constellation that provoques certain feelings. Franz Ackermann?depicted that is his "mental maps, giving up a perspective representation. I'm fascinated?by his compositions, the use of colours and the combination of gesture and constructive?elements.

My interest in landscape as a motive for my paintings started in 2000 during a residency in?Finland and Stockholm, where I influenced by the famous nighttime nordic light, experienced?the landscape as extremely virtual. This is also due to the diversity of concepts of urban?planning that were realised in Scandinavia with a specific enthusiasm. Encouraged by the?possibilities of working digitally, I created an archive of urban landscape fragments, which I?combined freely in the digital sketches for my paintings. The contact with virtual worlds and?learning 3D modelling was like the "missing link".

?

Maja Rohwetter. Something Somewhere, 2011

GameScenes: Some video works, e.g.?Something, somewhere? (2011), are virtual fly-through three dimensional landscapes. This piece is very poetic and it also provides a viewer a radically different experience?compared to a painting. Are you interested in exploring video - and perhaps even interactive media - for your future projects??

Maja Rohwetter:?Yes, sure! I?m dreaming of an interactive gaming environment based on painting, addressing?the media immanent aspects of the spatial construction. It should visualise it not only by the modelling, but more by its inner structure (programming) and interaction design. Now its a 3D landscape that looks as if there were bugs, but I would really like to play more with the?visual phenomena of real time rendering and its problems.

That is a bigger project that can only be done in a team of programmers and modellers, and I?don?t have the resources to realise it at the moment. I have been working with students from?Jyv?skyl? Uniersity of Applied Sciences and Medialab in Helsinki, and really would like to?co-operate with professionals in the context of game developing.?

GameScenes: You participated in several exhibition in Sweden and right now you are featured in the??Hj?rta spel? event at Datamuseet in Link?ping. Do you have any special relationship with Sweden? I am specifically thinking about your series ?Stockholm??

Maja Rohwetter:?I came to Stockholm during my masters year in 1997 to study at Kungliga Konsth?gskolan?with Ann Edholm who had an understanding for my conceptual way of painting. That was?a very productive stay and I made a lot of good friends and long lasting contacts. So I came?back with a DAAD grant in 2000 and try to come for a longer period from time to time. I have?been living in Stockholm for 2 1/2 years all in all and kind of fell in love with the city, also?because of its very special urban planning and collage-like look. The Stockholm paintings?relate to that. I have been working with the gallerist Jan Stene for more than 10 years and had?the chance to present my work to the Swedish public. And I love the language and the light?and hope to be in Sweden from time to time.

Libyan who helped capture Gadhafi dies

Anis Mili / Reuters

Mourners pray near the coffin of Omran Shaaban on Tuesday in Misrata, Libya.

By NBC News wire services

One of the young Libyan rebels credited with capturing Moammar Gadhafi in a drainage ditch nearly a year ago died Tuesday of injuries he allegedly sustained after he was kidnapped by the late dictator's supporters.

The death of Omran Shaaban, who had been hospitalized in France, raised the prospect of even more violence and score-settling, with the newly elected National Congress authorizing police and the army to use force if necessary to apprehend those who abducted the 22-year-old and three companions near the town of Bani Walid?in July.

His family claimed he was shot by gunmen, then captured and tortured by militiamen still loyal to Gadhafi.

Libya is battling lingering pockets of support for the old regime, and its government has been unable to rein in armed militias in a country rife with weapons. Earlier this month, a demonstration at the U.S. Consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi turned violent, killing four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Shaaban was praised as a "dutiful martyr" and a "brave hero" by the National Congress, which has?ordered the defense and interior ministries to find those who abducted Shaaban.

No reward
However, his family says he never received a promised reward of 1 million Libyan dinars ($800,000) for capturing Gadhafi on Oct. 20, 2011, in the former leader's hometown of Sirte. The eccentric dictator was killed later that day by revolutionary fighters.

His body was greeted at the airport in his hometown of Misrata by more than 10,000 people for a procession to the soccer stadium for prayers Tuesday and he was buried early Wednesday.

Ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was shown no mercy and brutally killed by the same people he ruled over for more than 40 years. Graphic pictures and videos captured his final moments. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

His brother Hussein complained that the Libyan authorities did nothing to help Shaaban. ?

"Libya was declared liberated of Gadhafi's rule on October 23 last year. It isn't," he told Reuters.

In Gadhafi's lair, album found filled with photos of his 'darling' Condoleezza Rice

On Tuesday in the capital Tripoli, several hundred protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the National Congress to demand that the government avenge Shaaban's death.

Shaaban's family said that he and three friends had been en route home to the western city of Misrata from a vacation in July when they were attacked by gunmen in an area called el-Shimekh near Bani Walid.

Shaaban and his friends, who like many Libyans were armed, fired back, the family said.

Two bullets hit Shaaban, and he was paralyzed from the waist down, his relatives said, and the men were captured by Bani Walid militiamen.

A town of about 100,000 people, it remains a stronghold of Gadhafi loyalists and is isolated from the rest of Libya.

Libyan president to NBC: Anti-Islam film had 'nothing to do with' US Consulate attack

President Mohammed el-Megarif visited Bani Walid this month and secured the release of Shaaban and two of his companions. A fourth is still being held.

'Sliced with razors'
When Shaaban was finally brought home, he was "skin and bones" ? still paralyzed, frail and slipping in and out of consciousness, according to another brother, Abdullah.

"It was clear he was beaten a lot," Abdullah Shaaban said. "His entire chest was sliced with razors. His face had changed. It wasn't my brother that I knew."

Omran Shaaban was later flown to France for medical treatment.

Shaaban, the second youngest in a family of nine children, was a member of Libya Shield, a loose coalition of the country's largest militias relied on by the Defense Ministry.

NYT: Deadly Libya attack a major blow to CIA efforts

Khalifa al-Zawawi, the former head of Misrata's local council, said the government reneged on paying the reward to Shaaban.

Abdullah Shaaban said his brother did not mind, saying he considered capturing Gadhafi to be his national duty.

While Libya's president released a statement Tuesday vowing that those responsible for the violence against Omran Shaaban would be punished,?apprehending and disarming the militants in Bani Walid are among the most daunting tasks facing the government.

The town is heavily armed with rocket-propelled grenades, automatic weapons and artillery left over from last year's civil war.

Residents there say that pictures of Gadhafi are displayed during weddings and youths play his speeches on their cars' stereos. Students refrain from singing Libya's new national anthem and teachers refuse to follow the revised curriculum.

US Ambassador Chris Stevens was 'courageous,' Obama says

Bani Walid fighters were blamed for many of the sniper attacks, shelling, rapes and other violence against the city of Misrata during the civil war, and there were new calls Tuesday from residents of Misrata for vengeance against Bani Walid.

In July, fighters from Misrata threatened to attack Bani Walid after two journalists from their town were detained there. The journalists were eventually released after mediation by the authorities.

Shaaban's eldest brother, Walid, insisted there would be justice for the family, regardless of whether the government is the one to administer it.

"I plan to pursue his rights legally and join if there is a military incursion. We are going to death, God willing," Walid Shaaban said.

Family friend Abu-Shaala echoed that sentiment.

"If the government does not go in, we are going in," he said. "We are all patient. But our patience has limits."

Stunning photo shows Seagull Nebula

A huge cloud of gas that looks like the head of a seagull shines brightly in a gorgeous new picture snapped by a telescope in Chile.

The photo, taken by a telescope at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory, shows the head portion of the Seagull Nebula. The cloud of gas spotlighted in the image glows intensely due to radiation blasted out by a hot young star at its heart, scientists said.

Like other nebulas, the Seagull is a stellar nursery ? an enormous cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases where stars are being born. Nebulas come in a variety of sizes and shapes, some of which spur astronomers' imaginations and evoke comparisons to animals or familiar objects.

The Seagull Nebula is so named because it resembles a gull in flight. The nebula, which is formally known as IC 2177, spans about 100 light-years from wingtip to wingtip. It's found about 3,700 light-years from Earth, on the border between the constellations Monoceros (The Unicorn) and Canis Major (The Great Dog).

The nebula appears to be close to Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. But IC 2177 actually lies more than 400 times farther away from us than Sirius, researchers said.

The bright star lighting up the Seagull's head is known as HD 53367. This star, which is visible in the center of the image and could be taken to be the bird's eye, is about 20 times more massive than our own sun, researchers said.

Radiation streaming from the nebula's young stars causes surrounding hydrogen gas to glow a rich red color. Light from these hot bluish-white stars also scatters off tiny dust particles, creating the blue haze seen in parts of the picture.

Parts of the Seagull Nebula complex were first observed in 1785 by the famed German-British astronomer Sir William Herschel, but the region imaged in the new picture wasn't photographed until a century later, researchers said.

Fast-Food Logos Burned Into Pleasure Center of Children's Brains

That I rooted my android devices to install an ad-blocker. Works perfectly, ad-free.

That I don't watch TV, or rather not broadcast TV. I download the TV-series I want, from torrent sites where I block the ads.

I have multiple layers of web ad-blocking, priv-proxy, ad-blocker, ghostery and finally opera's own rather good content blocker.

I use a government friend who has access to digests created from newspapers for polticians, ad free newspapers.

I don't buy DVD's because of their forced ads.

I don't use streaming services that display ads. Youtube is very easily manipulated to show zero ads.

I have my groceries delivered so I don't have to go to the supermarket and deal with the visual bombardment created to get me to buy stuff I don't want.

I do my tech shopping from pricewatch lists and real user reviews, so I don't have to deal with advertising on product sites and "pro" reviews sites whose product is paid for reviews.

THAT is how effective advertisers have become. I didn't used to mind ads but over the last decade they have managed to stimulate my brain into a rabid hatred of even the tiniest exposure to advertising.

And I am not alone. If advertising really worked, they wouldn't have to force it on us. The low point apparently happening in New York were kids were forced to watch commercials in exchange for school. It was a VPRO documentary so it probably was true (they are left-wing but to serious to make stuff up).

Why do you think you can't skip the commercials on DVD's? Because the advertisers are confident you enjoy watching them and want the information? No, because advertisers know all their tricks are useless in persuading people to watch something they don't want to.

Brush fire burns 30 homes near San Diego

By NBC News staff

A brush fire southeast of San Diego near the Mexican border has burned about 2,000 acres and destroyed or damaged 30 homes and at least 15 outbuildings in the area, NBC San Diego reported Monday, citing California fire officials.

The fire was sparked around noon on Sunday and was moving rapidly eastward, the officials said. Firefighters had the?blaze 10 percent contained by Monday morning, but windy conditions were expected to make progress difficult. Some 80 homes remain threatened.

Evacuations are in place for several neighborhoods along the Interstate 8 near the Campo Indian Reservation in East San Diego County.

At least 600 firefighters from Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, Indian reservation fire departments and agencies throughout the county were battling the fire, UT San Diego reported Monday afternoon. Cal Fire reported there were 57 engines, nine crews, six air tankers and six helicopters are at the scene, the report said.

Authorities have not confirmed any deaths or injuries from the fire.

However, people who lived along Tierra del Sol Road where most of the homes were destroyed said they were worried about an elderly neighbor who had not been accounted for, the UT report said.?The man's pickup was still in front of his burned down home.

Red Cross officials turned a high school gym in the nearby community of Pine Valley?into a shelter for evacuees and a casino just north of the evacuated area was being used as a command center.

Ranchers Bob and Laura Gooken considered evacuating with their 28 Clydesdale horses, but it was too late.

"When it came over here across the road, it was right there and we thought about it we can't leave so we decided to stick it out," Bob Gooken told NBC San Diego.

"We just held our breath and got very, very lucky, we're very fortunate," said his wife, Laura.

The fire?s path is in a desolate rural area where many of the buildings are vacant, according to Cal Fire spokesperson Mike Moehler.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, firefighters had contained about 40 percent of a separate fire in Riverside County, Calif., The Associated Press reported.

The 150-acre blaze had mainly been reduced to embers and hot spots by Monday morning, firefighters said, but as many as 200 homes were still in its path in rocky, brushy terrain that hadn't burned in decades.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
