College on the cheap: Take a course at MIT for free (Yahoo! News)

A full year of classes at famed?Massachusetts Institute of Technology costs a whopping $40,460. But just for being a faithful Tecca reader, we'll let you take a class at MIT in the comfort of your own home for the low, low price of ... free.

Okay, so this isn't just an offer for Tecca readers ? anyone can take the MIT course 6.002x: Circuits and Electronics for free at MIT. It's part of MITx, the college's new experimental online?learning initiative.

MITx represents the logical next step in the college's philosophy of making learning readily available over the internet. MIT has been publishing course materials to the web for public viewing and learning for the past 10 years via their?Open Courseware program.

The entry-level college course is identical to the one actual MIT students are required to take as part of a Electrical Engineering or Computer Science degree. There are no prerequisites for the course, though participants are expected to have a grasp of calculus, linear algebra, and advanced high school level physics. All students will have free access to an e-textbook, a discussion board, and a virtual lab meant to replace the real-world version at MIT.

Just like a real course, completion will require you to do homework and take graded exams. All told, the course is an estimated 10-hour-per-week commitment. If you demonstrate an acceptable level of learning over the 3-month course, MIT will issue you a certificate of completion. It's not the same as official course credits and it won't get you a college degree, but you'll still walk away with the same level of knowledge as someone who spent the full 40 grand.

If the introductory video is any indication, it promises to be entertaining at the very least. How many college courses have you been to where the professor tears into a laptop with a chainsaw?

If you or someone you know is interested in giving the Circuits and Electronics course a try, you can sign up for free at the?MITx website. Classes start Monday, March 5 and run through June 8, 2012.
