A selection of Tweets from Dawn Berkley's Twitter account/
By Bob Sullivan
Dawn Berkley appears to be a passionate, young female Mitt Romney supporter from La Crosse, Wis., a key battleground state.? Her Twitter and Facebook pages are jammed with anti-Democratic Party talking points like this: "The Democrats have a good cheat machine in Minnesota. Look how Al Franken "won." Watch the scum like a hawk," posted Sunday on her Facebook page.? Or this recent Tweet: "Obama campaign to girls: Have sex with vote for O," with a link to the conservative website ?Brietbart.com. She's also left a smattering of pro-Romney comments at news websites and blogs, like this one on a Forbes.com story about Clint Eastwood's Republican National Convention speech: "I thought it was relevant and VERY funny! I?m 22 and never watched an Eastwood movie till after I saw him do this skit. The man is remarkable."
Berkley's social media presence is also remarkable.? Outside the political commentary, there is scant activity on her accounts.? And she has a remarkably thin photo collection for a 22-year-old -- in fact, there's only one picture available to her Facebook friends. Her mandatory profile photo shows an attractive young woman posing with an over-the-shoulder, come hither look. Perhaps that's why the very same photo is used in many places across the Internet, including on various Asian massage websites. The rightful owner of the face, however, appears to be Korean pop singer Lee Hyori, who uses the image as her promotional headshot.
So who is Dawn Berkley, if not a dead ringer for a Korean pop singer? NBC News managed to get whoever controls her Facebook account to accept a friend request, but that person did not respond to follow-up emails, so there is no way to know. It's possible she is a 22-year-old Romney supporter who simply doesn't want to use her own face online for privacy reasons. It's also possible that everything about Dawn Berkley's account is, like the photo, fake.
If so, it would hardly be the only phony social media account used in this election season.? Accusations have been raised against both parties that Twitter and Facebook follower numbers have been inflated by millions through various manipulations. In the first presidential election where social media is a full-fledged election battleground, the rules of engagement are anything but clear. That's led to some unsavory conduct.
A social media management company named Status People caused a stir in August when it said it estimated that a majority of President Barack Obama's followers were either "inactive," meaning they never post Tweets, or fake.? (It's important to note the firm uses a very rudimentary sampling method). Questions dogged the Romney campaign about its Twitter ranks in July, when Romney's followers jumped 17 percent in a single day.? That news sent opponents into a frenzy, scanning the list for fakes, which weren't hard to spot: One skeptic found six Romney followers using the same photo.
There have even been claims by hundreds of Obama supporters that they were somehow tricked or hacked into "liking" Mitt Romney on Facebook, as evidenced by the "Hacked by Mitt Romney" page. ?Facebook says there's a much simpler explanation than hacking; it's fairly easy to accidentally like a page on Facebook, making that the likely culprit.
Both campaigns deny buying followers or engaging in any wrongdoing, such as what might be called "political sockpuppetry" ? creation of fake identities to espouse the candidate?s views. It's entirely possible that anyone engaging in fake Tweets or comments is doing so on their own, without instruction from a campaign.? It's also debatable that there's anything wrong with posting political comments under an assumed identity online. Pseudonyms have long played an important role in American politics: Pamphleteers in Colonial times often used fake names (PDF).
In the commercial world, however, such fakery is illegal, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Faux endorsements of companies or services by invented characters, or by people who receive compensation but don't disclose it, violate the Federal Trade Commission Act. Such actions constitute false advertising, the agency says. Of course, that hasn't stopped the practice of fly-by-night firms creating fake blogs with commenters discussing how much they like a certain magic herbal cure or that problem-solving gadget. It's so widespread that the online advertising community has created a name for it: "The Fakosphere." Getting into the fakosphere is easy, and cheap. There are numerous places online offering 1,000 Twitter followers for as little as $5.
The fundamental problem is simple: The Internet is built to enable anonymity, no it?s not possible under normal circumstances to know if someone online is fake or real. That?s a perfect playground for those who would engage in sockpuppetry.? Fortunately most Internet users are aware of the anonymity issue. ?Still, even professionals can be fooled. When a fake Twitter account created in the name of actor Jake Gyllenhaal tweeted, ?As a Democrat, I'll say it now, I endorse Mitt Romney," the post was convincing enough that The Drudge Report briefly reported it as fact.?
For their part, Twitter and Facebook say their terms of service prohibit all such behavior, but it's obviously a challenge to monitor 1 billion accounts for signs of fakery. Still, the companies try.
Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said the company doesn?t have statistics or anything specific to say about the "political space." But he pointed toward a recent company blog post that described "site integrity systems, including recent increases to our automated efforts to remove Likes on Pages that may have been gained by means that violate our terms."
And Zach Green, who runs left-leaning Twitter political consulting firm 140Elect.com, said that concerns about fake online political activity are overblown.
?We haven?t seen any large astroturfing events,? he said, referring to widespread campaigns organized by masked sponsors and designed to push a hidden agenda. People have been waiting for one the whole election cycle, but it never really materialized.?
Internet users are particularly unforgiving when a fake account is exposed in wrongdoing, as occurred during Hurricane Sandy, when a Republican campaign worker in New York was caught Tweeting false information from an anonymous account during the height of the storm. The incident proves that while it?s easy to spread misinformation online, the Internet is has a pretty good self-correction mechanism. That?s why he thinks both campaigns have stayed away from any widespread fakery, Green said.
?There is such a small benefit to the campaign, and there would be such a large backlash,? he said.

MONTREAL - The embattled mayor of Quebec's third-largest city, who faces corruption allegations, will announce his resignation Tuesday or Wednesday, QMI Agency has learned.
Laval Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt took a temporary leave at the end of October citing health reasons after anti-corruption agents conducted raids at his homes and financial institutions.
Sources told QMI Agency that the mayor decided to resign in order to focus on defending his reputation.
Quebec's permanent anti-corruption unit raided Laval city hall and the mayor's two residences in October. Agents also raided safety deposit boxes at four financial institutions in the Laval area in order to determine if Vaillancourt received bribes linked to contracts awarded by the city, as is alleged by Quebec's construction inquiry.
Vaillancourt has consistently denied the accusations against him and has not been formally charged with any crime.
He has been the mayor of Laval since 1989 and won four consecutive elections.
The city of Laval is part of Montreal's metropolitan area, however, it has its own mayor and council. Its population, at more than 400,000 people, has grown rapidly in the past few years, surpassing the Canadian average.
Quebec law stipulates that due to the fact that a municipal election is scheduled within a year's time, the mayor's replacement will be decided by the city council and not through an official election.
Vaillancourt isn't the only mayor dogged by corruption allegations.
Provincial ministers recently suggested Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay might want to think about quitting in the wake of damaging statements at the Charbonneau Commission, which is looking into corruption in the construction industry.
Tremblay was present at a meeting during which two other officials discussed illicit campaign financing, his former organizer recently told the construction inquiry.
Tremblay announced at the beginning of November that he was taking "a few days' rest" as a new poll indicated most citizens wanted him to quit amid the corruption scandals.
Quebec Premier Pauline Marois has promised to tighten laws controlling the awarding of public contracts.

One down, one to go for Oregon.
The Ducks moved up a spot and passed Notre Dame in the BCS standings on Sunday, moving into third place behind Alabama and Kansas State.
Oregon is coming off its biggest victory of the season, winning 62-51 at Southern California on Saturday night. That result, combined with Notre Dame's overtime victory against a middling Pittsburgh team, helped nudge the Ducks by the Irish this week.
Alabama (.9957) is a rock solid No. 1 in both the polls and the BCS computer ratings this week. The Tide needs only to win out to reach the BCS title game for the third time in four seasons.
Kansas State (.9318) is third in the polls and in the computers, but second overall.
The Ducks (.9166) are a solid No. 2 in both polls, but still fifth in the computers.
But the Ducks have a stronger schedule than Kansas State from this point forward, making Oregon a strong bet to pass the Wildcats if it keeps winning and earn a spot in the BCS title game in Miami on Jan. 7.
The Ducks play at California on Saturday before finishing their regular season against two teams in the BCS top 15, Stanford and Oregon State. If they get to the Pac-12 title game, UCLA or USC would be the likely opponent. Both are in the BCS top 20.
Kansas State is at TCU and Baylor the next two weeks, before finishing with Texas on Dec. 1. The Longhorns are 17th in the BCS standings.
Notre Dame (.9050) is in fourth place with only two opponents with a winning record left on its schedule. The Fighting Irish are at Boston College on Saturday, then come home to face Wake Forest before a finale at USC.
Behind the Irish in the standings are four Southeastern Conference teams ? Georgia, Florida, LSU, South Carolina.
Associated Presstebow broncos ben roethlisberger downton abbey season 2 2013 dodge dart shameless kwame brown martin luther king day
LONDON (Reuters) - In the politically packed days ahead, an election, a coronation and a two-part parliamentary vote each has the potential to alter the course of the global economy for years to come.
The election, of course, is on Tuesday for the White House and Congress. Two days later, China's ruling Communist party begins the 18th congress in its history.
Barring one of the biggest political surprises in modern times, the carefully choreographed gathering will culminate a week later in the crowning of Xi Jinping as successor to Hu Jintao. He will hold the reins of power for the next decade.
That the world's two biggest economies are choosing their leaders at the same time is unprecedented. Investors are right to be transfixed.
Yet arguably it is a pair of votes in Greece, an economic minnow, on whether to accept labor reforms and more austerity that could have a greater short-term impact on financial markets.
In the U.S. election, markets are pricing in the status quo - victory for Barack Obama in enough swing states to return him to the presidency to renew battle over tax and spending with a hostile House of Representatives and a bitterly divided Senate.
The outcome of talks over the ?fiscal cliff' - a package of tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect in January if there is no long-term pact to cut the budget deficit - is already a major uncertainty for markets.
Tuesday's voting could muddy the waters even further.
"It's not easy to map out what the outcome of the election will mean for policy, both immediately afterwards and also for next year," Bruce Kasman, an economist with J.P. Morgan, said on a conference call.
In any event, Bill Adams, an economist at PNC Financial Services Group in Pittsburgh, said negotiations on the fiscal cliff would have a greater impact on growth for 2013 than Tuesday's election itself.
"Similarly, with the 18th Party Congress in China, we know who's going to win THAT election. The odds for an upset coming out of those two events are relatively small," Adams said.
GREEK VOTES ON KNIFE EDGE
As for Greece, the assumption is that Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's coalition will muster enough support on Wednesday to win a vote on structural reforms and a follow-up vote on Sunday on an austerity budget for 2013.
But it will be a close call.
Holger Schmieding, an economist with Berenberg Bank in London, said it might take the defection of just three more coalition lawmakers to doom the reform package.
"In this unlikely but not completely impossible case, the euro zone could be headed for a period of turmoil," Schmieding said in a note. "The Grexit debate could be back with a vengeance despite the clear desire of Germany to keep Greece in the euro."
He saw a 25 percent chance of Grexit - Greece's exit from the euro - in the next six months.
At the very least, the tight votes will show that Greece is reaching the limit of its capacity to accommodate its international creditors, who are demanding ever more austerity to hit deficit goals that grow ever more distant the longer the economy contracts. Greece is now in its sixth year of recession.
"There isn't an effective pro-growth policy for the euro zone right now," Adams said. "Sooner or later the political process will have to acknowledge that this policy mix isn't working, and that will open a lot of rifts."
NO CHANGE FROM ECB, BOE
The financial crisis in the euro zone, which is flirting with recession, is still the biggest obstacle to global growth, according to a senior U.S. official.
Nevertheless, a Reuters survey of 73 economists saw an 80 percent chance that the European Central Bank would hold its main refinancing rate unchanged at 0.75 percent on Thursday.
In the same vein, economists attached just a 40 percent probability to a further round of asset purchases from the Bank of England, which also meets on Thursday. The odds on extra monetary easing have lengthened since the British economy grew more strongly than expected in the third quarter.
The biggest day for data could be Friday, when China issues investment, retail sales and industrial output figures for October.
But this is a week for the political economy, and the main focus will be on any signals from the party congress in Beijing that a change at the top might augur a quick shift in economic policy to spur consumption.
Nothing is impossible, but China-watchers reckon gradualism will remain the hallmark of what is a collective leadership. The new team will need time to consolidate its grip on power.
Economists at Barclays Capital led by Yiping Huang said consideration of systemic policy changes is probably a year away, but the new leaders could show their reformist credentials by picking low-hanging fruit in areas such as resource pricing, income distribution and tax policy.
"We might start to hear such discussions at the annual economic work conference in early December or at the National People's Congress in early March," they said in a report.

All the world knows that Hurricane Sandy hit the New Jersey/New York City metro area the hardest, killing an estimated 113 people ? including over 40 people in New York City alone ? displacing hundreds of thousands, and putting millions into darkness. Then the cold came.
All the world also knows that LGBTQ kids and teens are always the hardest hit as well ? sometimes, literally ? by members of their own families. And often, sadly, if it?s not physical abuse LGBTQ kids and teens face from within their own families, it?s emotional abuse. Or, often, both.
40% of homeless teens are LGBTQ, a staggering percent, given that an estimated 3.4% of adults are LGBT. Literally, if you?re an LGBTQ teen, your chance of being on the street is ten times higher, at least.
Superstorm Sandy decimated the Ali Forney Center on the West Side of Manhattan. They describe it as ?uninhabitable.?
The Ali Forney Center?s mission ?is to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ) youth from the harm of homelessness, and to support them in becoming safe and independent as they move from adolescence to adulthood.?
There are few more urgent and necessary non-profits to support.
The Ali Forney Center?s?Executive Director, Carl Siciliano explains:
?
Dear Friends,
Yesterday we were finally?able to?inspect our drop-in center in Chelsea, half a block from the Hudson River. Our worst fears were realized; everything was destroyed and the space is uninhabitable. The water level went four feet high, destroying our phones, computers, refrigerator, food and supplies.
This is a terrible tragedy for the homeless LGBT youth we serve there. This space was dedicated to our most vulnerable kids, the thousands stranded on the streets without shelter, and was a place where they received food, showers, clothing, medical care, HIV testing and treatment, and mental health and substance abuse services. Basically a lifeline for LGBT?kids whose lives are in danger.
We are currently scrambling for a plan to provide care to these desperate kids while we prepare to ultimately move into a?larger space that will better meet our needs. The NYC LGBT Center has very kindly and generously offered to let us temporarily?use some of their space, and we hope to determine the viability of that on Monday.
We have been deluged with kind offers from people who wish to volunteer and donate goods. Unfortunately, we will have to provide our services in the time being in much smaller spaces that won?t accommodate volunteers or allow for much storage space. The best way people can reach out to help in this very challenging time?is by making monetary donations. Please go to our website at?www.aliforneycenter.org/
It is heartbreaking to see this space come to such a sad end. For the past seven years it has been a place of refuge to?thousands of kids reeling from being thrown away by their parents for being LGBT. For many of these kids?coming to our drop-in center provided? their first encounter with a loving and affirming LGBT community. I thank all of you for your care and support in a most difficult time.
No doubt, as readers of?The New Civil Rights Movement, you?ve donated what you can to victims of Hurricane Sandy. No doubt, you?ve dropped more than a few bucks on various relief and charitable efforts throughout the year. That?s because people concerned with social justice, equality, and the common good are just likely to want to help others.
But I?m asking, if there?s any way you can help these kids, during what is arguably the worst moment in their lives ? homeless, with now no where to go, in the wake of a brutal hurricane that hit this area of the country the hardest ? well, all I can do is ask.
Please, give what you can.
You can donate to the Ali Forney Center?s Hurricane Sandy drive via their website, or send a check to:
